will instant brown rice totally sabotage my diet?

ChefWide said:
I am a huge fan of the flavor, texture and damn near perfect nutr. values of steel cut oats... pearl barley is another one that is very high up there for me on the day to day combo....

when you say legumes... are you including lentils in that category?

Oh, of course. Everything from lentils to various peas (green, black eye, etc.) to various beans.

I wasn't comparing brown rice to anything else. My point was that brown rice is far from "refined". I never suggested there weren't other options that might be better but brown rice certainly isn't "crap". Oat bran just doesn't compliment my grilled salmon very well.

Ok... I'll just say it's caloric content to nutrient ratio is far less favorable than many other grain choices, that's why I call it junk based on my view of a "healthy diet.". Technically, there are no "junk" foods as they all do provide some macro and micro nutritional value, it's just certain foods have disfavorable nutrient to Calorie ratios. For example, fat free vanilla ice cream has only 27 more calories, more protein(much higher quality), similar fiber, more magnesium, and less fat than instant brown rice; It also has a GI under 55. However, I would never recomemnd it as a staple of the bodybuilding diet.

Here is fat free vanilla ice cream;

Can you explain what you mean by "heavily refined"? I'm not following. I have a box of instant brown rice and a bag of regular brown rice (both Uncle Ben's). The instant is "pre-cooked long grain parboiled brown rice", the regular is "long grain parboiled brown rice". The only thing that needs to be done for it to be instant is some cooking...nothing more. That doesn't change the fact that it is a whole grain and i hardly consider cooking to be "heavily refined".

Again, I'm not trying to argue that brown rice is the perfect carb source.

There's a HUGE difference between instant and regular brown rice. Instant Brown Rice has to be heavily refined in order for it to be instant. You can feel the difference between instant brown rice and regular brown rice.

I have to take a Glucorell just to eat brown rice, that GI is too high for me and affects my blood sugar levels. Depending on the person, there are better carb sources.

you guys forgetting yams and buckwheat as a slow realising carb source.....i don't use brown rice anymore....i hate it....and i think that brown rice is just as bad as white rice.............the only carbs i have are buckwheat, yams, and oatmeal..........substitute your brown rice with buckwheat...........buckwheat has the highest protein % out of all in the plant kingdom

also, buckwheat is the best tasting carb source and fills up very satisyingly. it has a nutty flavor and amazin with butter, or flavored butter spray for the hardcore

I use the same kraft minute brown rice as MM. I throw 3 servings into tupperware with 1/2 cups water and nuke it for 8 minutes. Sometimes I leave a box if it at work so I can nuke it there.

The ingredients are just brown rice. There's no difference and I have lost 21 pounds in two months cutting with it and my strength has not decreased at all. eat up.

still, brown rice is really bland though, and also buckwheat has a good history with strength and endurance athletes in russia

I think the answer is in variety.. brown rice, yams, fruit, vegetables, barley, etc, etc. u want to get a diverse variety of nutrient sources into your system.

But hundreds if not thousands of top notch bodies have been built on the forever boring diet staple of chicken and brown rice. It's not about to sabotage anyone's diet.

yes.........most people who use brown rice don't know that there are better tasting whole grains, but doesn't mean they didn't get results from the brown rice......i don't last long on boring.....especially when you are natural and your hunger levels are natural
