I hit my calves on two seperate occasions this week. Mon/Wed..
Wednesday I really roasted them good, but only for three sets. Thursday they felt a little tender, but yesterday monring, as well as today(sat), when I woke up, I can barely walk... my right calf is very tender and its VERY soar to straighten it all the way... If I walk on it for a little while it doesn't bother me... but its tender to the touch and kinda soar if i really think about it when doing stuff on my feet.
When I woke up yesterday I was alittle concered I maybe toar the muscle off the tendon... but it appears to work fine... I've been doing some weightless calf raises in an attempt to do some active recovery... but I'm not sure what the actual problem is...
Could it be a muscle pull/strain? Could it be a tear? Or do you think I just have some massive micro-trauma with lactic acid buildup?
Thanks for the help!

Overtraining them..

You must find the correct combination of intensity, volume, and frequency...

yes, i've had that happen to me. they've even been so sore the next day that i couldn't even drive! give it a couple of days for the pain to subside. i doubt that anything serious has happened, but if it doesn't go away after a full week of rest then go see a doctor.

I seriously doubt I'm overtraining them, but I guess it always is a possibility...
I have been doing a 3x week full body routine for 3 weeks as sugested by coolcolj for a post layoff comeback prior to going back full force...
Anyways.. I only did 3 sets of monday and 3 sets on wednesday...
They were VERY intense but no more than 12 reps on any one set.
The only other thing I can think of, is that I've been doing a lot of moving around of heavy objects at work.... maybe that contributed to over training...
Thanks for the input!
Anybody else have any ideas?
Thanks

Something similar happened to me some time back. All i did were a few sets of standing calf raises. 2 days later i couldnt even walk. Any movement of my ankles and i'll scream in pain. It was really a bad experience. It felt more like a tear than soreness. I had to take a few days off training for it to fully recover.

Could you have concentrated alot on the negatives hence the extreme muscle soreness?

My calf is feeling about 85% today..... Still a bit tender... But feels a lot more like typical muscle soarness today. Hopefully should be good to go for tomorrow... I have a little doubt... but we'll see..
I think i had a minor strain.... Going in the hot tub daily really helped soften it up I think....
Thanks for the help boys

this happened to me a couple of years ago. I had drank a couple of hours after a leg workout. BIG mistake. my legs were dehydrated, and I literally could not walk, because my hamstrings were so tight. looked like a zombie with a broomstick shoved up my ass trying to walk.

I know exactly what you're talking about DrB. This use to happen to me whenever I trained calves. The day after they would feel a little sore, but nothing serious. Then the second day, I could barely walk. If I sat for more than 5 minutes I would have to massage and painfully stretch out my calves in order to stand and walk without them completely locked up. This would stay with me for at least a week. I had to limp everywhere like a had a loaf in my pants.

I tried everything, stretching the shit out of them pre and post lifting, less volume, more frequency, less frequency, etc. I stopped training calves for a while, then started up after a few months and it hasn't happened since. So, I guess I have no answers for you, just wanted to say you're not alone.:)

Hopefully I dont have to go as far as not training them... that would suck... I'll try hitting them hard again later in the week and let everybody know what happens.. I got my fingers crossed...

Funny thing... I didnt have anything to drink the day I trained my calves but I did the day after... the following day is when they started to ache... So that definitely could be part of the equation...

Thanks
