Sorry - But WHAT really cause constipation?

My fiber intake is pretty high I think. Upwards of 2 cups of oats, prob. a 1/2 cup of fiber one, and plent of greens and broc each day, yet I still get bound up like a beatch! Sometimes, at night, I have a bad habbit of snacking on my last meal while I watch the tube in a prone position. If sleep occurs to soon after, could this be the culprit? My cardio is daily too, so I thought it would help, but neh.....

not enough water can but i doubt thats the problem. I don't know what to tell ya. Just drink a couple cups of coffee im sure you'll have to problems. I think they say sleeping on your stomach can cause improper digestion. I think your side is best.

Hey man, there are a few other factors that can contribute to your problem.

Lack of water as was mentioned

Too much concentrated protein at one time (like we are going to be able to avoid this!!)

Disturbances in gut bacteria (is your gas unusually...."potent"? smelling, if so a bacteria supplement for the digest system could help)

Any new supplements you may be taking that your body is not used to could be the culprits.

If all else fails, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) is a remote possibility.

I would say, make some diet changes, cut down on the protein for just one day, with fewer sups for that day and see what happens. IF nothing, try a bacterial supplement, and if nothing there as well, have a quick chat with yer dok. Cheers!

Do you use a source like fitday to log your food?? The reason I ask is, is that are you sure you are really getting enough fiber?? And lying in a prone position after eating would be more likely to cause GERD than consitpation.

I logged the 2 cups (cooked) oatmeal, etc into fitday & that = about 26g fiber, so I would think you'd be OK.

Did this just start happening or has your bowel problem been this way for a while??

I dont have pains, heartburn, trouble swallowing (sym. of GERD) but I have the very opposite of liquid bowel movements. Feels like I'm passing boulders.......water and fiber consumption is high, I know it is........high protein could def. be an issue.....

In addition to high fibre foods and what I mentioned above there are many foods that are inherently high in NATURAL laxatives that are not harmful like the manmade ones. You could try to include some of these in your diet as well.

Almonds, apricots (dried), avocados, chicory, coconut, dandelion (yes get out in your garden and eat those dandelion leaves, so long as they have no chemicals on them!), dates, endive, figs, flaxseed, grapes, mango's, olive, papayas, parsley, persimmons, pineapple, prunes, rhubarb, soybeans, turnips, walnuts, watercress.

It is nice to note that many of these foods are high in EFA's and other good stuff.

If your fiber is TOO high, that also can cause constipation. What is the amt in g's you are eating a day?

I assume, knowing you, that your water intake is high ....? Right?
