R-ALA vs ALA: A Blood Glucose Impact Analisis

Question has been raised already and I think it should be raised again.

Why not use a verified quality racemate instead of kilosports? This way if there were any variations of brand quality it would be against the best there are. Otherwise all this study will show is that either AF's r-ALA or Kilosports' ALA does not elicit the same response.

Bottom line, this is a brand comparison right now, not an examination of usefulness of the different isomers. But results will be far from conclusive.I know cost is part of it and even with the current brands it will be a step in the right direction.

Which kind do you have in mind?

No worries about cost, ALA isn't perticularly expensive.

Need input....LOL

Jarrow Sustain (300 mg Time Released Version).
Pure Encapsulations
Thorne Research
Beyond A Century-Primarily due to the apparently high customer feedback response. I've been pleased with their products as well.

There may be more high quality brands out there but these come to mind first and foremost.

I've heard good things about Jarrow; for the purpose of this experiment, I would not use the time-release formula though as you'd be comparing a time-released product against a non-time-released product; jarrow also has non-time-release ala supplements, so that would be a viable choice...

I've had good experience with BAC. I like their powder product. If you do use this, just make sure to put silica packets in the bottle (or cap the powder) to help keep it from degrading.

Also, I'd like to see the type of dosages bbers are actually going to take. People are generally going to (at least) triple the amount of racemic ALA they take in versus pure R. Racemic is a lot cheaper, so people will take more. In other words, not many are going to take 300 mg of racemic and expect it to compare to 300 mg of R. Might expect 600 or 750 mg to compare though...

At the very least, you need to measure R to R -- since racemic is 50/50 and it has been pretty much agreed upon that the R component of racemic is what makes it work, and that the S component actually brings performance of the R down, you need to measure to what extent this occurs (if any). It will take 200 mg of racemic to 100 mg of pure R to at least compare apples to apples.

I also think that if you're going to do this, you need to use the ALA like most guys are -- with each meal (even if you are only testing 1x/day). Using it 1x/day (if I read your original post correctly) may not accurately reflect any systemic build-up that either of the ALA versions may possess.

WTF gives, wheres this report?

BTW heres an update on personal experience with ALA that i found interesting. I think it really helped fight off a cold some co-worker gave me. She was coughing and had sore throat and no energy, and when i get a cold thats usually the way i am. But this time, i only cough a coughed a couple times a day, and noticed that there was some flem build up in my throat, but nooooooooooothing like a cold usually is for me. I heard one of the things alal does is make your body make more vitamin C and E, and i reallly think it helped me out.

The problem with ALA is that it is very heat-sensitive.

Even within the same brand, a bottle that has sat in a 108 degree UPS trailer for 29 hours is going to be much less potent than a bottle that was just made.

The best ALA is the freshest ALA that has been exposed to the least amount of heat.

I wish people took as much care in handling ALA as they do for flax seed oil. They should.

Hopefully I'll be able to add some new info to this subject before too long. I'm currently planning a study involving short-term and long-term effects of R-LA vs racemic LA in diabetic dogs for my PhD research at Virginia Tech, but it might be a few months before I have some preliminary data. And yes, I know that an experiment with diabetic dogs doesn't necessarily apply to healthy humans, just don't tell that to my graduate committee! (:^>

BTW, I've been looking into the effects of American Ginseng on postprandial glucose disposal, and it appears to be a much less expensive way to do what everyone is trying to do with R-lipoic acid, though I haven't yet tried it myself:

1) Vuksan V et al. American ginseng attenuates postprandial glycemia in a time-dependent but not dose-dependent manner in healthy individuals. Am J Clin Nutr 2001;73:753-758.

2) Vuksan V et al. American ginseng reduces postprandial glycemia in nondiabetic subjects and subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Arch Intern Med 2000;160:1009-1013.
