q about a man not eating enough?

We get qs from guys asking about girls - I'm asking the opposite - I know this is the women's board but I got no joy on diet. My guy friend who got me started on lifting is in need of diet advice. He has previously lived on sugar alone basically, now he has decided to cut & is eating 1200 calories a day. Obviously this is crazy - he is 175 and short - but what do y'all think is a decent range? I tried to tell him 12*bw, which would be 2100, but e got all like 'I've never eaten that much, I'll be a big balloon!' Any suggestions on how to deal with the male rexies? I am kind of surprised by his weird diet ideas, he lifts four days a week and is concerned about upping his squat & bench numbers, but still seems to think no harm will be done by eating 1200 calories a day for a month or two.

Mods - if this isn't OK to post here just axe it - I am just hoping that the women's board will have better advice about crazy not eating people - not to perpetuate stereotypes about girls and food :)
 
Lola.....I wish I had some advice for you......my hubby doesn't eat right, is a vegan, eats little to no protein & sometimes just doesn't eat...........his arms & legs are really lagging.....but I can't get it thru to him that he needs to eat.....

I'm here with ya on that one....
 
lola: ok - your guy friend is nuts... My BMR calculator says that he needs to be at least at 1800-1900 to just break even. Well, he can get very strong on bench, etc. The guy I work with is about 6'2" and 150LBs! - he can bench press his body weight 10 times. So you guy friend will be lean as shit and no muscle.

Try to introduce a couple of snaks - see if he can drink an extra little shake or 2 - that would be another few hunred cals. EAS Carbsense are 150 cal each - 2 of those a day + the rest of what he eats would be bare minimum and he will not feel full of the shakes. Just my 2 cents.

I can not even imagine eating 1200 cals / day - my gf eats more then that -:)
 
If he lived off sugar, my guess is he ate MUCH more than 1200 calories without knowing it.

Tell him to keep a food journal for a few days eating "normally" and add up the calories and macronutrient breakdowns. He might be suprised.
