Old School Training trick?

I ran track in school and had weight training too. This was 20 years ago by the way. Our coach would have us do low weight squats and inhale on the way down then when we got to the bottom hold our breath to the count of maybe 10 then come back up inhaling. It wasn't for our legs. He said because we were young our breast bone was still soft and could still stretch and we were increasing our chest width and chest cavity. He said it hardened in our 20's. Is there anything to this? Was it complete BS?

I think it's pure b.s. and he just wasted your time in the weight room.

He should have been training you to improve your athlete performance not your chest width.

BS sorry...your entire chest cavity is flexible otherwise you couldn't breathe or have changes in intrabdominal pressure and pregnant women would be extra screwed :)

only very small children have somewhat flexible bones and aside from injuries/diseaes/deficiencies and hormonal influences theres nothing that changes their genetic predetermined size

what I suspect your coach was teaching you accidentally was how to use the lower end of your lungs...for some reason adults lose this ability because they teach themselves how to shallow breathe
pranayama breathing (yoga) teaches people to utilize their lungs more fully

Very interesting. Makes sense. My therapist teaches me this for anger management. Haha

Maybe he was just a chomo and wanted to watch you bend over for extended periods of time. Ive never heard of any shit like that.
