Mercury content in fresh salmon???

HodgeMN

After hearing about all the mercury in canned tuna, does anyone know what the mercury content of fresh salmon is?? I have been able to get really good deals on fresh salmon steaks and have been eating about 3 lbs a week.

i swear every time i turn around there is a new bad rumor about salmon. The farm raised salmon would appear to eliminate the mercury content, but now I hear that farm raised salmon have large amounts of some cancer causing substance. I say fk it. Mercury is cool :P

The mercury content in Salmon is minimal compared to that of tuna. And that's relative of course too.

I'd be more worried about PCBs in Salmon. However recent evidence shows the PCBs to be far below those levels said to affect humans.

So basically unless you eat a pick-up truck full of the stuff every month. I wouldn't worry about it.

But the mercury in canned tuna is supossed to be added as a preservative...right?. So if you get fresh salmon steaks, has nothing to do with mercury...please correct me if i'm wrong....

djufo,

Without coming off as patronizing (sorry if I do). I highly doubt if mercury could be used as a preservative. If ANY company got caught "adding" any amount of mercury into their product they would be in Deep, deep, deep trouble with the FDA (usa), CFIA (canada).

Adding unhealthy things is one thing, mercury is another. Mercury is not unhealthy, it is DEADLY. Mercury is very bad Mojo for any living creature because it doesn't go away...like...ever.

Further mercury IS naturally occuring in aquatic environments and is often increased in it's levels by cumulative effects of man's activities. One perfect example is freshwater, man-made lakes from dams. Flooding an area will increase mercury levels in the aquatic environment for years, and years, afterwards from all the rotting and submerged terrestrial vegetation (I thinks it's the veg..) That's why so many fishing regulations have mercury warnings about the fish.

Anyway, blah, blah, blah...

1] mercury is a poison, certainly not a food preservative !

2] farm raised salmon is mercury free (but may contain some dangerous amount of PCBs and other dioxins)

3] savage salmon may contain small amount of mercury but there is no worrying about it (unless you're a pregnant chick)

Recently saw an article stating that although there is mercury in fish, it is changed slightly by the fishes body, meaning it isnt as harmful as, say, some mercury you'd get from a chem company.

There is no way mercury is added as a preservative.

Also, I've heard that there is more mercury in tuna steaks/tuna patties than what you'll find in the can. So, eat all the fish you want, there isnt much to worry about.
