Is it possible to lose muscle in the space of a few hours of not eating?

No you won't. Once your body digests all the carbs. you last ate, it then turns to the liver which has a large supply(say 12hrs) worth of glycogen that can be turned into glucose if needed. Don't forget, that while at rest your body's main energy source is fat. So the less active you are, the less glucose needed for energy and longer you can go w/ out food. Also it takes around 10 hours for food to travel through the small intestines and the nutrients are absorbed. So it takes really long periods w/ out food for you to start burning muslce.

huh?? I thought that after carbs, the body will turn to protein for energy, which is easier to convert into energy than fat. which is why I never train on empty stomach.

that's when training. But when at rest, the body uses mostly fat. Also during Aerobic activity, the body uses 75% fat and 25% muscle(protein) for energy. once it turns into anaerobic(lifting) your body uses only glycogen, be it from what you've eaten or stored). Your body used stored energy first but yes since you're lifting and it's anaerobic your body will need glucose so after all that is stored is used it will turn to using muscle. But that's only during the anaerobic activity.

Very interesting! Thanks sublime! ;)

Good post, i would like to know the answer as well....also to add to the bro's post...while cutting i get really hungry during my low carb days...i eat around 2 - 2.5 hours and still feel hungry...now the purpose of cutting is to cut calories/carbs from the maintenance level correct, so hunger is just part of the game...?
brocolli really helps keep you feeling full, eat lots of it. A spoonfull of ANPB is also great way to kill hunger 'til your next meal.

as for the original question, I'd say that depending on the intensity of your activity, after a few hours you might go into a catabolic state. For example strenuous activities such as dancing, sex, running, fighting, etc.... Sitting around talking, cracking jokes, drinking, (low instensity) will make your body use glycogen (reserves, if you will) as someone else above has mentioned and if you're drinking, well you're getting tons of carbs/sugars and adding to the reserves (and body fat) instead of losing anything.
