How long to be SORE? How to speed recovery?

Tomorrow I´ll post what I have regarding "soreness."

IT does state that the chemicals processes that create the feeling of soreness are catabolic in nature. Also, its not lactic acid that creates the soreness.

What does L-glutamine do to alleviate soreness?

I worked out my chest/arms/back on Friday and am still really sore. I'd like to work them today, but I don't want to damage myself any further.

It's funny, every muscle in my upper body is screaming and shocked to the core, while I can work my lower body into oblivion with no complaint.
 
I find that there are two kinds of pain I get:

1. lifting pain
It hurts just a little all the time for about a day. This happens when I up the weight, change my style or slack off for more than 5 days.

2. aerobic pain
After a BIG run my legs hurt for about 2 days but only when I lift them very high or try to do splits or something. Since it goes away in 2 days this is not an injury right?

Now here is my question-- how dose running cause pain? I mean I'm not doing a movement that is very hard-- just doing the same movement a whole lot... why would running 10 miles cause pain when running 6 is just fine? (not being stupid-- looking for a more 'techinical' answer to this...)

I find after running any distance more than once in about 2 months it no longer causes pain. Why do I lose my lifting power in only 5 days but the running power stays for a few weeks?

spatterson Of course they're catabolic. You rip the fibers for the purpose of letting them heal. The properties of this catabolic process help to release the agents that promote healing, which is anabolic. BIG PICTURE.

The lifting of weights is supposed to cause the micro-damage, not the chemicals left behind after leaving the gym.

Again I forgot my book on the way to the internet place.:p

I think I have failed to communicate myself.

I know lifting tears the micro fibers of the muscle. The lactic acid does leave quickly but, as I stated, it is not lactic acid that produces that feeling of soreness 24 to 48 hours following lifting.

You mention that catabolism leads to anabolism. THis is a little oversimplified, don´t you think? If not, why not just inject myself directly with cortisone and save money on a gym membership?
 
Tear down the muscle with weights to grow, yes.

Soreness to grow, no. To the contrary.

Hopefully we understand eachother more clearly now...:insane:
