In terms of powerlifting excellence over time, Lamar Gant is unparalleled. 15 times he was a National and World Champion. In 1975, he kicked off his run of dominance by annexing his first national title (123-pounds), creating a World Record total of 1185 in the process. Later that year he secured his first World Championship, all at the tender age of 18. At one point, Lamar simultaniously held the World marks in each lift in the 123-pound class (518 squat, 319 bench press, 639 deadlift, and 1388 total).
Lamar was one of only two lifters to win more than 10 World titles. He was the first to deadlift over 5 times bodyweight. He was the first to total more than 12 times bodyweight, a feat he registered in the 123 and 132-pound classes.
