Found out the reason i was STILL loosing weight

Well I stopped cutting over a month ago now, in my first week of not cutting (while on holiday) I still lost 3lbs in that week! Did a lot of walking, swimming tennis, but I felt that I was eating around 2500cals a day, to try and maintain my weight, hard to keep track with hotel food. Anyway, when I got back I tracked my weight, trying to balance out at my Metalabolic rate + any exercising I was doing...and yes you get it, still lost more weight.

Anyway I got offered the chance to have a 'body gem' session at my local gym, free of charge. This I went to, they measured my body fat, which is down to 5.5%, my weight which is not 149lbs (yes....i am going to bulk, only just been cutting to get defined before bulking), and yes my metabolic rate....my metabolic rate was sky high, 2900 calories was my basic metabolic rate, so if I was to lie in bed for 24hours and sleep, I could still eat nearly 3000 calories, I was freaking shocked. Now im a student, very active lifestyle, would give myself about a 1.5 activity level, maybe even more, this works out at over 4000 calories without bloody exercising!!! This last week has been exceptional, ive been able to eat shit loads...and yes ive not moved a pound on the scales....just imagine how hard bulking is going to be for me folks.

Anyone got any ideas why my BMR is so high??!?!? What could it be?
Im 19, 5'11, 149lbs, 5.5%bf...any ideas? I really want to bulk up about 20lbs in the long run and this is going to prove a hell of a lot of food!!!

Cheers

Dan

hey dan, its easy to add cals that are fairly clean... forgive my ignorance: what's body gem?

Based on your current age, weight and height, your BMR should be 1791.4 .

When you assess your BMR via 'Body Gem', you must do the following to get an accurate result:
  • Do not eat for at least 4 hours
  • Do not exercise for at least 4 hours (aerobic or strength training)
  • Do not consume caffeine or nutritional supplements or medications containing pseudoephedrine for 4 hours
  • Do not smoke or use nicotine for at least 1 hour
  • You should rest in a seated or reclining position for 10-15 minutes before the measurement (minimize speaking and movement)

Assuming all of these steps were followed and the assessed value your were given was correct, then you need to check your nutritional intake for the presence of any stimulants. If your diet is clean, then the other option to look at is an over-active thyroid gland as this will definitely affect your metabolism.

The 'Body Gem' measures how much oxygen your body uses at a resting position. You breathe into a mouthpiece for 10 minutes and the device uses a series of calculations to determine your BMR. It is regarded to be very acurate. You can usually find them being used in specialised centres of hospitals or well equipped gyms. Personal units are also available but do alot of checking around as the prices can go from one extreme to another. (400-2000 equivalent US$).

Yeah, at 5'11" 149lbs. I find it very difficult to believe you have enough muscle mass to have BASAL metabolic rate of 2900. I'm 5'9 172lbs. (145 LBM) and my calculated BMR is around 1800-1900. If I eat over 3200 cals or so/day I start putting on fat even though I work out 5 days/week.

However, it is NOT hard to believe you're still losing weight if you're eating 2500 cals/day. If your BMR is around 1791 as Kian said, and you train regularly I'd say you burn somewhere in the neighborhood of 3000 (rough guestimate, of course).
