Do you guys keep the same core moves even when changing splits/routines?

I generally keep the same core moves in every split I do, change up the reps a bit or something. I'm a bit tired of standing bb military press though. What do you think - make it a seated version, or change to a dumbbell version, or stick with it because it's great?

I keep squats, deads, and bench the same. I like to switch up my militaries, to standing, sitting, or sitting dbs. Pretty soon I'm gonna start clean n' press.

Like you Steel weaver. Very seldom do i significantly change exercises at all. I mean there are only so many really useful mass builders. Too many people change for the sake of changing mainly because they are too lazy to be analytical as to what is actually working, so they fgure i'll change things up and shock my muscles. That to me is a waste of time.

I do both seated militaries and seated dumbell press in all my shoulder routines.

You can always go seated with them, but I always suggest that your core exercise be one the you focus on using lots of weight on the bar. You could try doing overhead partials from different rack pin settings...then do some overhead dbells. You can also superset overhead barbell press with laterals if you wish...

You could add OL moves if your back and shoulders are the same day. Something like a hang snatch or power cleans. Or you could do a pre-exhaust set before the bb presses. Have you tried 21's with these?

Mmm, some nice ideas. I'd love to learn OL moves, but I'm going to wait til I go home and can find someone to teach me.

The way I have things set up is I just go as heavy as possible for 4-6 reps on all core moves on heavy days, then, depending on energy levels and how long things are taking, I do supersets, or alternating supersets for assistance moves, or just keep things heavy for straight sets with higher reps. I mostly do supersets and pre-exhaustion on light days.

I guess what my real question is is: how much better are standing military presses than, say, seated militaries or db presses? And isn't it redundant to do bb militaries and db presses in the same workout? I know the standing version works the core stabilisers too, which is good for me.

Are db presses be as effective as bb?

There's no sub for squats and deads. None.

For bench you can do inclines for a period, or DBs for bilateral strength.

Same for militaries. Try using DBs. You can do different hand positions and stuff.

And there's always the Arnold press!

I never do them standing because of the strain on the lower back, always seated. Also, i think with standing militaries, no matter how strictyou are, you will always be prone to thrusting upwards with your legs to push out a rep. With seated it's difficult to use any body thrust. To be honest, i could probably go into the gym and do 8 sets of dumbell presses or 8 sets of militaries and do nothing else for shoulders. The reason i do both is to stave off boredom more than anything, but i think both are far superior to any other shoulder exercise, so i do them both and don't really bother with any other exercise, save for shrugs.

Some people will advocate a pushing movement followed by a flye or row or lateral raise of some type for shoulders. I don't go along with that

I switch my exercises up every couple of weeks. With the exceptions being The Bench,Deadlift, and Squat I maintain them in any type of split I do.
