Diet help for a heart patient

My dad has 5-7 blockages of 90-100%. He's going under the knife tomorrow, and if he makes it, he's gonna need a pretty clean diet.

He CLAIMS he eats stuff like Slim-Fast, granola bars, healthy choice dinners and grilled chicken, and has recently switched off pop to tea. But he hasn't lost any weight. I dunno if he has a thyroid problem or what. He's somewhere around 6'3" 340lbs. But anyway.... I started telling him all the things I ate, then realized half of them won't work because they have high sodium/cholesterol. Now, he can't cook hardly at all, so that limits it as well. So far on the list I have:

Oatmeal
WW toast and natural peanut butter
Unsalted dry roasted peanuts
skim milk
grilled skinless chicken (foreman grill)
baked potatoes
rice

Also, I thought there was something really wrong about Slim-Fast? Would it be better if I got him some Optimum Whey instead? Is it as filling? I know I can't get him Nlarge, he doesn't need to become diabetic as well. What else can we put on this list? What about fast/restaurant food that's ok so he knows what he can eat when he goes out?

My grandfather is in a similar situation...

Cut the lean cuisines because they have quite a bit of sodium... I would cut the iced tea too unless its decaf.

the only thing wrong with slim fast is the sugar content... If he is gonna lose wieght, he's gotta stay away from the sugar and carbs...

As far as going out and eating, its really not possible... No matter where you go, most places pack on the salt and sodium. My grandfather tries not to eat out anymore because it is just too hard... Try going to some organic places..> there is a real good greek food place i go to that has all healthy organic foods, and they use all sodium free products... Try to find a place like that

I wish you and your dad the best of luck... I already said a prayer for him. I hope all goes well

Try for foods in there most natural state. Lean chicken is great, so are many fishes. Brown rice, oats, all bran, beans and yams are great sources of carbs providing hefty amounts of fiber. Tofu, soy products, soy milk, and organic frozen meals are great. Nonfat yogurts are good. And really emphasize fruits and veggies with some non or low fat dips. This is very important if he wants to snack or is very hungry.

Good luck

Your father's health, AND LIFE, are being jeopardized because of all the poison, deceitful advice that the average person, such as yourself, have been FED for years. Since the 80's, all we have heard about is low fat, high carb diets, and how counting calories is more important than eating foods with significan nutrional levels. Stay away from that sugar-coated crap like that Slim-Fast, and that carb-filled, preservative-filled garbage like Healthy Choice Dinners, Lean Cuisine, etc. All that garbage does is reduce the fat, while loading up the body with sugar and carbs. If you put your father on a heavy sugar diet consisting of multiple, daily Slim Fast shakes and candy bars, your father will be dead within 6 months after surgery. Sorry to be a dick, but if that's what it takes to save his life, then I will be a dick. KEEP THE SUGARS AND CARBS AWAY FROM HIM. Also, make sure he is not eating foods heavy with cholestrol, for that will also do some heavy damage. He should have protein-filled, virtually carb-free, sugar-free foods like egg whites (NO YOK) and chicken breasts. NO CHEESE, SUGAR, CARBS, etc.

Low carb or low glycemic diets are best. Get him the book, The Schwarzbein Principle . Dr Schwarzbein was a heart doctor and she saw all these patients they put on high carb low fat diets. Dying or needing to have multiple open heart surgeries. Her method is low glycemic .
