Deadlifts off the rack...WTF!

I put the barbell on top of the rack as in the poles going across in a squat rack at the bottom a few inches higher than the ground so i would be able to handle more weight than going straight from the ground. I have hit 485 PR for stiff legs off the ground but i could only hit 460 a few inches and it is a shorter movement!

What the heck...i thought i would be able to hit like 500 and i hit 460...does this mean i have to work on my upper back some more so i have more strength through the top?

That has to be the problem...that's kinda what i felt...but aren't i supposed to be able to do more weight or is what happened to me normal?

try rackpulls with the pins 1 or 2 inches below your knee cap....you shoulkd beable to pull some big weight then....this great for strengthening your lock outs

Try and pull from a higher pin setting at first and then move the pins down. I also had a similar result when pulling from a low set of pins. I am not positive, but I think part of the problem may be bacause of the fact that when you pull from a rack, your body is often in a different position than it would be had you pulled the bar from the floor to the same point.

I can't pull any more from 4 inches off the floor than I can from the floor, but from my knees, I can pull more than what I can hold in my hands even with straps, so you would probably be served to start the bar at about the kneecaps, and work your way down.

Good luck buddy,

B.

I tried 2nd pin up in the squat rack..only a few inches up. I was intense today. I have a new tradition. Go to get some chalk...walk over to the bar grab it and do it. No thinking involved, period.

Hit 495 on the pin pull!

It was sweet...back to squatting as well hadn't squatted without the box till last week and went 275 for 8 reps for 5 sets. Felt good. I am going to surprise ppl this coming season.

Good to hear. Don Reinholdt would pull his opener in the rack with the plates eight inches off of the deck, and drop the bar one inch every week eight week out from the meet. He had a great deadlift.

He was also the first man to squat 900, and he did it with just ace bandages, so he must have had something working properly.

Pulling from the rack is very hard. It would actually be easier if you placed the plates on a platform that raised them up. Don't ask why...but it is true. I was having problems pulling 725 in my rack at home...but had no problems with 800+ from platforms in a meet. Something about the bar and how it rolls etc...in the rack.

I pulled 835 a few months back with only a loose belt from 18". Not from the floor. I think I have 900 or better in me with a tight belt and a suit from 18".
