I have been studying up on youth weight training, safety and injury rates. I came across this article that some may find very informative. This link is from Dr. Kilgore. Make sure to note the difference between preadolescences, prepubescent and pubescent youth. It will make more sense that way.

i started my daughter with bw atg squats when she started soccer...
she then moved up to doing 'zerchers' with a gallon of milk...
then with her form being damn close to perfect, she easily deadlifted the oly bar (same as her bodyweight) with perfect form...
and then did a single (with perfect form, therefore assuming her max is a bit more) with 65lbs...
last week she came home from school with torn pants, messed up hair etc... said she beat up a boy on the playground, wrestling...

i see no harm in training kids as long as it is done safely and responsibly...

my oldest son turns 6 next month, but he isnt as mature/disciplined as she was at that age... i will probably be sending him to mma classes first and let them break him in a bit... that and its somthing he WANTS to do...

my daughter gets calluses from doing the monkey bars at school and is trying to get them like mine...
