used insulin, but am I in ketosis yet?

On Saturday night I started a ketogenic diet (for cutting/fat loss purposes).

Anyway, I had a final carb meal Saturday night at 7pm. At 8pm my blood glucose was 98. I took 4 units of humilin-R. At 10pm my blood glucose had dropped to 88. So, I took another 4 units of humilin-R.

By midnight my glucose was 52. I stayed awake for another 90 minutes just to be sure it was safe to go to sleep. At 1:30, my glucose was 55, so I went to sleep.

I woke up at 8am checked my urine with keto-stix. The ketone reading was negative. Does this mean I'm definitely not in ketosis yet? I checked my glucose and it was 58 at 8am.

This is the first time I've used insulin, so I'm thinking maybe I'm already using ketones for fuel and that is why the urine stix was negative for ketones? Or is it more likely that I'm not even in ketosis yet?

Yeah I know I should be in ketosis in 2 or 3 days anyway, but the insulin was supposed to speed it up to like overnight.

Anyway, I might be in ketosis now, because the keto-stix test now shows 'trace' ketones. This is at 5pm of the first day.

don't feel all that hot though...

bacon, ground beef and macadamia nuts is all I've had all day (although plenty of each).

Using insulin is not a good idea if you don't need it. There are far better things to take/inject to help you lose fat. If you do need it, getting into ketosis is the least of your worries. Eat good, train hard, you'll shed the fat.

always02 bah its great to use to get into keto quicker, less muscle loss

bonapart. Ketostix never work for me either, if you got your blood sugar that low, and ate keto stuff your in keto :)

The nuts MAY have kicked you out depending on how much is alot. They have carbs in em :(

Get a precision xtra glucose monitor, it'll test for blood ketones. Much more accurate that ketostix MUCH MORE
ebay has em cheap, well wortht he price and much more accurate than some glucose monitors *the other I had was off by 10 or 15 :(

I never use Ketosix anymore, because of the inconsistency of the product. I use a blood Ketonic meter that measures my blood glucose level and Ketone levels.

Don't worry about it, if your blood sugar is 55 then you would be in Ketosis by next morning no matter what. Just go with the flow of the diet and don't mind the occasional negative Ketosix reading.

Hey, thanks for the tip. I will definitely get a meter capable of testing ketones.

Anyway, the ketostix showed moderate ketones on the morning of the second day, so I think I'm in.

I spaced the macadamia nuts out, I had 1oz four times, each a few hours apart. Each oz has 3g carbs, and 2g of it is fiber - I assume that really means only 1g of carbs per serving? The way I understand the labeling is that the fiber listing is a portion of the total carb listing.

Thanks to those who replied for all the help.

If the stix show anything at all, you're in.

Macadamia nuts are a tested fat fast, so it's unlikely that they'd knock you out. Check your bacon package for suger, smoke flavoring, nitrates, etc.
