thicker neck for contact sports

How do you train your necks...football and rugby guys reply!
I am doing resistance with a towel and holding each for 30 seconds, will this be enough?

I'm no rugger or ball player, but during boxing training our coach had us do a bit of neck work.One exercise was called "the obstinate calf" and required a partner.You got down on your hands and knees and your partner applied downward pressure on your head while you resisted.This was alternated with the partner placing a towel under your chin and pulling upwards while you attempted to resist.Coach also had us do wall leans.Lean against a wall and hold yourself in position by flexing the neck muscles.Most neck exercises were done for 30 seconds.
 
Like HighIntensity said, a towel on your forhead and a plate. You can do the same with a towel on the back of your head, lying on your stomach on a bench and doing the same motion. Use a lighter weight to get used to the motion.
