snacks before bedtime???

If you are going to drink a protein shake before bed, you need to make sure that it has CAESIN in it, which causes the protein slowly releases over time. If you just drink a regular WHEY protein drink, it will be absorbed within a half hour, then you will once again go into a catabolic state. This also makes whey protein shakes NOT a good choice in replace of meals. Whey is best used immediately after a workout when the muscles are damaged and can redilly absorb the aminos.
 
About to go have large plate or two full of hamburger helper with 2-3x the usual amount of hamburger in it...then go straight to bed.

very good point, whey protein is absorbed by the body within 15-20 mins, casein takes up to 4 hours which makes it an ideal choice before bed.
If you are trying to add bodyweight, drink a pint of semi or skimmed milk before bed(milk is 80% casein, no need to spend money on a casein shake) this should take care of the hunger and provide your body the nutrients it needs to grow.
Whey is a much better source of protein after a workout though, but i think casein is a better choice for most hardgainers.
 
If you must do a protein shake, do it. But your body will have it metabolized in about 2 hours. I would eat some meat, like grilled chicken breast, or if you are not watching your sodium- tuna. It will last longer.

When you are hungry-you are catabolic.
