I got to see that great weight move known as the power curtsey a few days ago in the gym. Luckily for me I was perfectly positioned doing rows on the bench opposite the relevant power rack to get a good eyefull of what was going on.
Here's the story, this gym memeber is dating this chick who is obviously on the uni's long-distance track team. (Total lack of development in upper body, we're talking stick arms here, and skinny legs but with major growth and definition in calves and hams, not quads, in the legs).
So, the guy loads up about 80kg on the rack and proceeds to do a set of half squats. I give him the benefit of the doubt, I assume he is doing partials in order to build up the top of his squat withot using chains or bands. Plus, his form on the half squat is pretty good.
No, he invites chickie to have a go. BUT he doesn't think she should unrack some of the weight first, oh no. He invites her to squat 80kg straight off. Now, I felt sorry for this woman, as for a lady who isn't a regular squatter, or even for one who is, like me, that is a lot of weight for a beginner. I will be very very happy the day I can squat 80kg. In fact, the day i can manage that much, I will place in competition over here. And she weighed a lot less than me. Obviously, this is wayyy too much weight for her, she does her best. She slowly gets about 1/4 of the way down, stops, comes back up. Reasonable form.
I wanted to go over there and slap the guy round the head "Teach your girlfriend to do these exercises properly, dude! Of COURSE she can't squat as much weight as you to start!". Guy congratulates her, says, way to go, you just squatted 80kg, and proceeds to load up another 20kg on the bar and repeat the process.
So, his ego is stroked, hey, I jut got my girl to squat 80kg.
Sigh. At least she's not curling the 2kg dumbells. I wanted to go over and suggest she book a session with one of the trainers who teach squatting form but figured the guy might not like that. Anyway, it'll make her time on the mile faster regardless, I'm sure.
