Optimum Nutrition protein shake question

Hi all,

I don't post very often but do read and learn alot on this site!

Recently I have taken my ON protein shake close to bedtime two different times and I have been awake practically all night. It's horrible. Do any of you know if the "Gold Standard" shakes have an ingredient that speeds you up?

Thank you, :)
Jessica

Are these the ingredients on your label?

"Ingredients: Protein Blend (Whey Protein Isolates, Whey Protein Concentrate, Whey Peptides),Cocoa (Processed with Alkali), Creamer (Sunflower Oil, Maltodextrin, Modified Food Starch, Dipotassium Phosphate, Tricalcium Phosphate, Tocopherols), Lecithin, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Salt, Acesulfame Potassium, Aminogen, Sucralose, Lactase."

If so, then no, they in & of themselves shouldn't keep you awake at night.

i also have the *gag* standard & its the worst tasting protein powder ive ever had. no sleepless effects (maybe your fructose intolerant)- but the vanilla flavor is pretty nasty...

Taking a protein shake before going to bed will minimize fat loss among other things.
Your stomach is also a primary organ so your blood flow will be directed there in order to break everything down.
Try taking it an hour before bed and the problem should be resolved.

You can also consider mixing in some sort of good fat like natural peanut butter or flax seed oil - fats will slow down metabolism of the shake so you don't get hungry sooner over nite. Not sure about the speed effect you are getting though. Do like slat says and take it an hour earlier to see if you settle down.

YOu can also consider adding melatonin to your supplement list - take right before bed. I don't suggest trying to take it only when you have trouble sleeping but rather as a regular supplement. The dosing has some weird effects if you take to much - meaning I"ve slept for 4 hours, had some really vivid & surreal dreams and up the rest of the nite on 1 mg. So I switched to liquid melatonin and take only 1/2 or 1/4 mg and I sleep great, no weird dreams or anything.
