Killer pain in shins...what to do?

I had this problem in the spring...only thing that made it go away was to completely stop running and go to glider, bike or stair stepper....treadmill hurt as well....and i got some athletic inserts for my shoes...the inserts were magical....no pain at all after that...but i haven't risked running....coed volleyball starts soon and i don't wanna miss getting to play!

also I think i had overworked quads as compared to hamstrings and calves....so have tried to hit them more and has helped...but it took weeks to completely heal

Try the dynasteps from Dr. Scholls- they are suposedly work wonders for shins and knee problems...if you are an avid runner invest in some serious running shoes- like the $100 and over pair.....although my GF loves Saucony's for alot cheaper...

Broadly speaking, 'shin splints' occur when the tibialis anterior muscle is over-exerted in trying to prevent the foot from rolling in too far (excessive pronation), causing inflammation of the muscle.

In your case it seems it could be a chronic problem, or just that you have started running distances that are too long..take it easy-aim to increase your milage slowly

Brooks beast, Acis' MC+ are good shoes for over pronaters

When u begin running or any activity that causes pain in the shin area, stop and ice for 10-15min. Also NSAIDS will help.

If the reduction of running, shoes, ice and NSAIDS are not working, go see a podiatrist who will make a pair of insoles or orthotics, that will allow the foot to function normally, thus preventing over-exertion of the tibialis anterior.

Hope this helps

Wow

Question, does anyone know of a good running shoe by Nike or Puma or Addias that will help me with my shin splints???
