hey guys,

i need help with my diet because i think im going down some slippery path. basicallly, as a teenager i was hypothyroid and had low t due to various reasons. this wasnt diagnosed till later, but i always had a hard time loosing weight.

i found that the only way i could loose weight was doing a basically ketogenic diet.

however, years of going through the mentality of 'carbs are bad- i should only eat meat and salad' has left me with a bit of an eating disorder. i now associate carbs with binge eating, and waking up the next morning 10 pounds heavier.

i have been dieting (ie not eating normally) for like 5 years.

as you can imagine, this viciouse cycle has left me in a weird position- i know carbs are important for growth and thyroid health (not such an issue now as im on thyroid replacement), and that they dont necessarily lead to weight gain, as dieting is a question of caloric defecit.

im 22 now and lifting weights 3/4 times a week if a trainer. i also walk about an hour a day intensely. im on thyroid replacement and high dose trt. im trying to get things back on track but i still havent managed to sort out my diet.

i go through these phases of dieting really hard for a week (protein shakes, chichen breasts, dry salad and not much else) sticking to literally under 20g of carbs a day, and taking stimulants to aid weight loss- and the results are quick as you can imagine.

But then ill get bored, or go to a social event, and eat like one bit of cake and end up eating the whole thing- and eating, and eating, and eating.

Moreover, even when i was on keto diet, i would get bored/hungry and have to eat like an extra 800 calories of cheese, nuts, seeds, meat etc just to get rid of the hunger pangs because keto food is so densely calorific.

i need a way to introduce carbs back into my life so that im not afraid of them. more over, i believe i will loose weight as carbs are satiating, and one of the problems on the keto diet is that i get bored/hungry and either end up having to eat another 1000 calories from dairy/fat/protein etc just to stop feeling hungry.

at the same time though, perhaps giving myself more freedom with carbs will open up a slippery slope, as ill start eating everything in sight- it is very easy to fall into bad habbids.

can you guys help me or just give me some general advice.

thanks guys

i use to be anorexic when i was younger, would eat one meal a day and lost weight fast. the thing with me since i was anorexic and now i eat a ton more food, i have the ability to easily control my diet and hunger. It takes alot of mind control to become anorexic i tell u that much, and now i have that mental control to eat healthy and not over eat and believe me im hungry all the time i just overcome the hunger. what im saying is u need to get more will power and control over your hunger, so u can be able to eat more carbs. im sure we have all ate cake and then wanted more, but we control our selfs and i think thats what u need to do. start slow with the carbs if u have the urge to eat more go do something and get away from the food. ull soon be able to start eating carbs and controling yourself from the urges u get to eat more.
spread your meals throughout the day so your not super hungry, eat small and then 2 hours later eat another small meal, and so on till u reach your set caloric amount.

it will be tough but u gotta push threw it, theres ppl that dont eat for 3 days at a time and they survive im sure u can survive by not feeding yourself everytime u get hungry

one of the problems i found with a keto diet was that it was so inflexible

because i was so dry - which was great- i felt really lean and good when my diet was spot on. but thats problamatic, cos the moment i broke the diet a little bit, i was like, well hell my insulin is up, im no longer in keto so why not blow the whole thing and just pig out.

theother thing about keto is that the food isnt very filling. where as most regular eaters will have an apple or some snacks if they arent quite full after a meal, if i was still hungry id go have like two packs more of chicken, or like an entire bag of nuts or block of cheese, and be like, 'well its ok to eat this as its keto food'. it was the lack of flexibility which didnt do me any favours.
