how often do you weigh yourself?

good point Daisygirl.

Agreed. Not everyone on the board is competing. I think if you are not competing there's no need to drive yourself crazy about the scale. I weighed myself for the first time in 2 months, last month. I was the same weight I was in 04/2005, however my BF was down 3% and I dropped a clothing size. It has gone down an additional 2% since that weigh in and my clothes are falling off of me. I will get on the scale this week. (it's been a month) and likely wait another month.

once a month at the doctors ofice other than that i take my measurments.

If my waist size goes down - time to eat

My point is that you take the data point for what it means to you. If it freaks you out, then there's no point to it. If you can use it as a piece of information that you just like to know or just take as exactly that, a piece of information that gives you some trend information, then it has purpose.

Very true

My comment is around the whole thing about trying to quantify "health" or "progress". The naive measurement is "weight". The media markets stuff like the Hollywood Diet that says you can lose 10 lb in 2 days. Doesn't mention that its water weight & not fat. You can also easily get hung up on weight + bodyfat. In actuality unless you are getting a BodPod measurement, your bodyfat measurement can be up to 5% off. Then you can also look at how your clothes fit. You can look at the increase / decrease in quality of sleep, general well-being, appetite, etc. So with all of these things, both "quantifiable" and subjective, the best you can come up with is a relative measure and that will still have inaccuracies. So you need to take all of these measures for what they are worth and what they mean. If they induce panic as opposed to just being data points that provide trend information or guidance in your routine, then don't use them because that isn't really what they are for.

i can eaisly go up 5 pounds in one day...

weight is just a number

But most people, especially women, cannot do that. Young females (even us older ones) are often so wrapped up in what the actual NUMBER is, that they cannot see weight as simply a "data point". They wrap their entire self-esteem, self-worth and mood around what a hunk of metal says about them. That is self-destructive.

Even people who KNOW weight means nothing can fall victim to this. I am an over-30, well-educated, smart, normal (debatable, lol) female. I was a personal trainer for many years, managed a fitness facility, supervised fitness staff, developed health and fitness programs for an entire gym, have a college degree and am a couple credits shy of receiving my masters. I KNOW better than to count on a number to tell me who I am. But I still did.

That is why I stopped weighing myself over a year ago. Even doing my BF% would change my idea of myself. If I am not competing, why do I need to know these things? Am I a better person at 15% BF than I am at 22% BF? NO. Who I am doesn't change with the numbers.

Maybe I would feel more comfortable in my skin at different BFs, but that doesn't change ME. Knowing the number did nothing for me - nothing good. if my clothes fit well, then I am doing things right and I keep it up. If they get tight, it is time to change something.

(of course, now EVERYTHING is tight and I am getting fatter every second, no matter what, lol :) *sigh* )

I like this post, I think it something to for me at least when someone finds out how much I really do weigh and they say "Wow you don't look that heavy". LOL Even my best friend had this reaction once she found out my lbs. I keep my numbers to myself for the most part. I look good and getting better every day that's enough!! LOL

thanks everyone...I tried to hit everyone w/K :)

Checking my weight daily is starting to mess with my head- because on heavy cardio days- Im lighter (duh)- but its only water loss. So, Im thinking Wed & Sat. Alot of you mentioned measuring bodyfat & I totally agree & will follow up with that.

thanks- you guys rock!
