I need to start using American birthcontrol since what I brought from abroad is running out :(

I do have health insurance, what are the steps for getting birth control, do I see a PPO or a specialist? I have no idea where to start.... I dont require referals and PPO and specialist cost the same $30 copay.

Hi nangiggles. I'm actually am not quite sure. I'm thinking you'll have to see a specialist/obgyn for that. I'm also wondering if you'll need a visit to check stats, history etc...?

I'm in Canada so I'm not sure if the systems are different but I've always just got birthcontrol from my family doc. I had to go for the physical exam to get started and keep up my annual physicals. Here though, you often don't see a specialist unless you request or there's something wrong. Mine was pretty straight forward.

find an OB GYN nan :)

you have to have a pap, then they'll prescribe oral contraceptives

if you need help finding one i find asking women you know locally can be very helpful...but if youre really stuck you can call your insurance company and they can give you a list of drs that take your insurance

Yep, an ObGyn is a good place to look. However general PCP's can do paps and write scripts for birth control pills...I have just always found it more comfortable to see an Ob rather than my pcp because I only have to see them 1 time a year...I guess embarrassment or something plays a role. They will have to do a pap before writing out a script though, and trust me- if you don't go 1 time a year they will stop writing your scripts for pills. LOL, many times I have missed because I didn't get my pap done in time. Ooops

OK will look into it, since I have to emergency go to CR I might stock up again on my old birth control since it's so inexpensive andhas worked like a charm for years :p but I definitely need to get the ball rolling here in the US as well.
