dropping calories slow or fast?

ive been on a bulking diet and it's working out real good. my current weight is between 158-160, so i gained about 4 pounds in the past week, eating 6400 clean calories divided into 7 meals. i plan on bulking til the end of december, and cutting after that. what im wondering is, alot of people just go from their bulking diet to their cutting diet. for example, say someone is taking in 400 cals for bulking, when they cut, they will just drop it to 2000 cals or so. wouldnt it be more beneficial to slowly reduce calories by 250-300 calories every week? it seems like dropping from 4000 to 2000 wont give you much to work with, once you plateau, but if you slowly reduce calories by 250-300 and slowly add in more cardio every week, wouldnt you get better results?
