Diet advice for my auntie

Hi all...

I need some advice fat loss advice for my auntie. She is about 55 and moderately overweight (mostly around the gut area).

She as been on a variety of diets of which i not sure how well she really stuck to them and more to the point they have obvious not worked so far.

At the moment her friends have got her trying a high protein, zero carbs, ketosis type diet. She has got all this literature from her friends but im still not sure that she is going about it the right way or even if it is the best diet for her? Im thinking basic clean diet would be better. She has even gone and brought a ketostrip thingy and is in the bathroom each trying to find out if she her body has switched yet.

She is also on hormone replacement type drugs for her age and menopause i guess. Im not use if this is an important factor.

What do you girls think. Should she stick with the diet she is trying, maybe with a few modifications if you have them, OR should she go for a completely different approach, of which can you please give some details!?

THANKS in advance

AB

Is your auntie training? if so, for how long? You mention that "she has been on a variety of diets", what type of diets? what is she eating now? In my opinion, I wouldn't put a woman her age on a keto diet, unless she was competing... of course hormone replacement for her age are of importance. I would rather advice to balance the diet first, and from that work to have her cutting diet, as you say "clean", and a regular exercise routine.

I second what Nikkita said, balanced, clean diet is probably the best bet.
Keto is difficult to stick to! It's especially difficult to be sure you get enough fiber, vitamins, & minerals. It can also be difficult for some to get enough calories - I know when I was eating a 40%pro, 40%carb, 20% fat split, I could barely tolerate eating that much protein (I'm not a fan of meat & eggs - eat them, but don't like them). I can imagine that if I cut carbs almost entirely, I would very soon be even more sick of meat & simply eat less cals than I should.

The other problem is that she'll also see weight loss quickly - but it'll be water & glycogen stores. When she goes off keto - they'll come back. What's the point? Keep healthy glycogen stores for energy & lose FAT on a balanced clean diet - so she can stick to it long term.

Also, is she doing any training? As she ages, she'll keep losing muscle mass & -possibly bone density. With lost muscle-> lower metabolism -> fat gain if she doesn't eat less. Also should do some training to prevent osteoperosis. Even if it's only like 30 min 3X per week with resistance bands or swimming - just so she gets SOME resistance training.

I was trying to post my diet for you but the search isn't working!

thanks

good advice...thanks

If you get hold of your diet plan i would appreciate u posting it up. Or maybe a sample or something.

I think that a keto diet is a bit of an overkill when a more simplier balanced diet would work, and would be much easier to stick to.
