Current Training Snapshot

Looks tough; sometime for variety, I'll switch out my bb routine and do something like this ... is your son lifting yet?

Oh, sure! He recently went from 2 to 3 pound dbs, and has a broomstick for squat and bench. His speed bench is awesome! He also does spread eagle situps with a "medicine ball" (kick ball), pull ups (bar hangs), curls, flys, rows, etc. He helps us with wheelbarrow work by sitting in it, and occassionally acts as a safety squat bar for Hannibal. He pulls the sled, and lets me use him for seated overhead presses. It's just Mama's playground to him. :)

That's awesome! My son (2) isn't quite into it yet, however, my daughter (4) loves lifting. She's gravitates a little more torwards yoga and bodypump since mom has instructor videos. She knows all of the basic yoga positions and a lot of choreography for bodypump -- funniest thing to watch!

She got her own set of 1 lb bells for her birthday in April and knows squats, clean and presses, military press and bench -- she understands pullups, but can't do more than hang on the bar for now. She can actually do pushups on her toes! She teaches class (to us) every now and then ... I remember when she was a baby, before she could walk, I used to hold her hands and have her do sets of bodyweight squats ... ah, the early years ...

Spatts, do you allow your son to have protein shakes bars etc. The reason I am asking is my son (8yrs old) is having a hard time putting on weight. He is fairly tall but only weighs 56 lbs. We are getting him ready for Football and I know the drills, sprints etc will take a toll on his weight. He is not a big eater already. Do you have any reccomendation as to what would be a good supplement that is safe for him?

SB

Give him some oatmeal! lol

Yeah, I give him protein shakes..Optimum 100% Natural Whey is sweetened with Stevia.

I don't do the bars and stuff...hell I don't even feed myself those unless I'm so hungry I can see a rib and there's nothing else to eat for miles. :D

Seriously, will he eat oats? Like if you mix in honey or maple syrup, or applesauce, or peanut butter and chocolate protein powder?

Will he eat scrammbled eggs?

My 3 year old weighs about 50 pounds (about 45 inches tall), and he's a "light eater" at this age too, but I can usually manage to get a few good carbs down him.

Corn? Will he eat that? Or potatoes? A potato is STUFFED with vits and minerals, but also has some cals. I make french fries (baked) from red taters or sweet potato chips (baked) for dinner sometimes too. Then he thinks it's a treat. ;)

How long between a snack and bed?

My son will take protein shakes on a limited basis, but he really likes carnation instant breakfast in whole milk -- you'll get some calories out of that too.

Another thing that may work for you that we do with my son is give him fish oil out of a teaspoon -- and he gets an M&M as a reward. You'll get some more calories that way and some good omega-3s into him ...

Do you ever have problems lifting same day as sprinting? I'm asking because I'll schedule a morning sprint and an evening lift, and end up dragging so much by the end of the day I'll forgoe the evening lift. Sprints really seem to take a lot out of me, and I hate to lift if I don't feel like I'm putting everything into it.

And what are parachute sprints? I have an idea of what they are, I guess, but what do you use for them?

Well, he is a picky eater. He hates oatmeal but will eat grits. Dosen't eat eggs at all. He does like his meat and corn though. I have a very hard time getting him to sit down and eat. He is a on the go kid. He likes peanut butter usually eats straight off the spoon. There is not much that he will eat, sometimes he would rather go to bed without if he is busy doing something else. The doc told me not to worry. As for as the time between supper and snack, Supper is usually around 7:00 ish and snack right before bed. Usually 8:30 or 9:00. Snack is never anything I would like them to eat but I rather see them eat than not so I bend the rules.

What would you do if you son did not eat the things you mentioned? Should I stop giving him the sweet snacks like cookies etc.. for snack even if I know he won't eat anything else?

I wouldn't have to do anything...hunger is a powerful motivator. He can eat what I'm serving or not eat.

If your son likes nuts give him those. Good stuff! Calorie dense and nutritious. :)

I put a pack on my back with a sprinting parachute, and midway through the sprint I release the parachute. It pulls you back hard, and you have to fight to sprint forward through it. It's like accomodating resistance for yout sprints. :)

How long of a sprint do you do with them? 100 meters? 200 meters? I can't see doing 40s, too short of a distance.

I'll try the nuts. I have already tried the hunger thing and he is stubborn. He didn't eat all day, I couldn't take it and I broke and gave in. I am a big softy when it comes to my children. I know their health is really important and I do what I can I just really hope he realizes this soon also.

Thanks

I hate to ask questions to which I could find answers independently, but since the search function here is real limited for non-paying folks here's a basic question.

Does the term active recovery refer to very light workouts for muscles still in recovery from a recent workout? I've heard a theory of using exremely light resistance to move extra blood (and nutrients) into muscles for accelerated repair. Is this close or am I way off?

Can someone post a link to an old thread where I can read more or maybe a URL?

Thanks :)

Anya, go to the traning forum. There are 3 sticky's, and one of them says "Active Recovery: How to..."

You could do it with just light weights, or even sled dragging lightly is active recovery and GPP. There are advantages to the bands though, and it talks about that in the thread. :)

Now I'm aggravated with myself for not finding that on my own. But thanks so much for the direction. I need to start looking into the other forums here.
