best cardio?

Dacypher.... what do all athletes have to do before they start practice? After stretch, run! I know if you run on concrete it's bad on your knees, but treadmill feels rubbery and you shouldn't run into that problem. And as far as your shoulders, i don't think there's anything better cardiowise to help loosen up your shoulder joint. All pitchers i know have to jog on their own to keep their shoulders flexable. Even some of the really fat ones you would never think jog actually do it. How they don't have a heart attack beats me lol, but they jog for shoulder purposes. ANd personally w/ me jogging (when not tensing your shoulders) helps loosen up my shoulders before i work chest or shoulders. But like i said, it's very different running on concrete versus running on the treadmill. Concrete you will mess up your knees and probobly do some damage to lower back i don't know.

Being an ex triathlete...I know cardio.
Do what you enjoy...then you will do it more.
Swimming is great and a better exercise.
Running is hard on the lower back and knees. I'm now paying a small price for my runs.

riskbizz007,

I understand that many people love to run. I'm not saying there are no benefits and I'm not arguing for anyone to stop running if they currently do. However, I am saying, that I find running (even on a treadmill) to be destructive on my muscles and joints (knee, hip, back).

My favorite cardio machine is the eliptical thing where you stand on two skis and rotate your legs. Great workout, and non-impact.

I would have to go with Test boy. Go with what you like. I myself like to run, but I change it up every couple days. I might run on monday, bike and run on weds., jump rope and box on friday, and so on. I love to box, and I feel that jumping rope works really well, because it works your calves, wrists, and forearms.

DaCyph, my favorite is the stair climber. I tried that eliptical w/ the ski looking thing, felt great that day. The next day i could not move my back, it hurt so bad and it kept hurting for the next few days. Funny thing was that was the 2nd time it happened to my back w/ that machine. I don't know... i guess Test boy is right, do what ya like

The answer is: There is no "best cardio." Cardio-vascular excercise, by definition, is any excercise that increases your heartrate. How you accomplish this is a matter of your own preference.

the best cardio is the one that burns the most calories. therefore, running is probably the best. there are other good choices out there, however--versaclimber and cross-country ski machine also burn comparable amounts of calories. if you use the bike, you will burn 500 cals/hr...running in comparison burns 800/hr (for a 185 lb man). so you could still use the bike, but you'd have to do it for more itme.
