Beginner Routine - need some help

Once again I want to thank everyone for all there help. Anyway, my power rack along with weights, bench will be here tomorrow. I am looking for input on a solid weight lifting routine for a beginner. I am 30 years old 5'8'' and weigh 190 lbs. I have a pretty high body fat% and have lost 25 lbs in the last 3 months. I am not to concerned about losing weight ( I have no trouble packing it on) and want to concentrate on adding muscle mass and definition all over. Pretty new to weight lifting outside of machines. I attempted a search but could not find much (maybe I need to become a platinum member?).

I suggest that you read the Training Methods sticky at the top of the page as well.

While, I have worked out in the past, I just started working out again. My wife (who has never worked out with weights) and I have decided to train using the West Side method.

We are only starting with the second week, but so far, we are very satisfied with the results.

I did look at the "sticky" routines but was not sure if they were good for a beginner. Thanks for the input. I think I will give the 5X5 a try. How long should I stick with this??

Opinions vary, and it is always good to change your routines now and then. However, with the 5x5 if you choose good compound exercises, I'd say stick with it as long as you can keep adding weight!

Once you plateau you can re-evaluate changing to a different program entirely, changing exercises, or changing to the 5x3 as described in that thread to blow through the plateau.

hey all 3 sets 5 reps at 265 bench today. Not a PR. but the best iv done since iv started lifting again. 2 months ago i was benching 135 for 8 reps. That was after a 10 year layoff. ill never stop again!!!!!!
