It's not about being amateur or professional, it's about being thorough. It's a way of testing the waters and can also be an indicator of her hygene down there. One shoud never "grow out of" it.

Fuck yea, you haved to test the waters first. You don't know if the water that you will be swimming in will provide refreshment or sickness in drowning. There has to be a toxicology test to determine if that toxicity/shit will eat away at your penis etc...
