Amateur Question :)

Hey all, just wondering... if I'm going to get up in the morning and go to the gym to do some cardio, is it better to eat before or after? Also, is it true that you burn the most calories in the hour immediately following a workout and that you should not eat until after that hour is up? Just something I heard from a friend. Thanks in advance for any help.

wait 1/2 hour to an hour to eat post cardio. dont eat before the cardio. depending on what type of cardio you can continue to burn throughout the day. this is usually with hiit cardio.

Eat after cardio, about 30min.

I am not a fan of fasted state cardio, and this is not to argue, but to state my stand and why. I would suggest some protein pre cardio. Then wait 1/2 hr. post cardio and have your normally scheduled meal, a low glycemic high fiber with fats to keep any fat burning you achieved from your cardio session going.

Now, here is my stance on this. It is based on the science of fat burning, not something I just say.

For fats to be converted to citric acid, oxaloacetate must be available. Without oxaloacetate, citric acid cannot be formed and acetyl-CoA cannot be further processed.

Oxaloacetate can be produced from the breakdown of certain amino acids. (read amino acids) However a person on a high fat/low carbohydrate/low protein/starvation diet, will need to use the oxaloacetate for gluconeogenesis.

Fatty acid breakdown however must still occur for ATP generation and acetyl-CoA will need to be processed through an alternative pathway. This pathway leads to the formation of ketone bodies.

Oxidation of fatty acids requires certain substrates (TCA) intermediates.

If those are unavailable, amino acids will be oxidized to provide them.

The amino acids will need to be derived from muscle tissue, leading to muscle wastage.

A sports nutritionist came to talk to our swim team at the beginning of the year. He said that we should eat a snack immediately after swim practice, and to have a full meal shortly thereafter (once we get home), to repleace the glycogen or w/e. Was he wrong then? Should I wait a half hour to eat anything? I have been bringing snacks to school with me for after practice, but I don't really enjoy eating at that time anyway, so should I stop this? (I am looking to loose some weight)

The idea is simply to allow lypolisis to continue for a bit. Eating a low glycemic meal with fats and fiber(neither will have any real effect on insulin, this is why it is ideal) will allow continuation. Insulin and glucagon are antagonists(both are secreted by the pancreas). You do not want insulin at this point if trying to burn fat.
