Am I a negligent Deadlifter?

Ive been deadliftin for a good amount of time now, and I am making good gains with 5x5. The thing is I never ever work the abs like a lot of lifters. It just occurred to me that the abs must play a decent role in the deadlift.

Am I being a fool by neglecting abs? will my deads show faster improvement just by working my abdominals?

actually i think abs play a HUGE role in my deadlift having gone up really fast. 6months back i used to do the pussy weightless situps as my only ab exercise, could only get 200 or so up on deadlift. i hit abs HARD (im up to 150lbs weighted decline situps now for 10 reps, 2 sets) and my deadlift just keeps creeeping up. deadlift up at 365lbs now =).

btw... maybe sidebends have something to do with it too... i've been hitting my obliques with 90lbs sidebends... all those stabilizers may make for a better deadlift.

Yes and Yes.

Screw crunches. Train your abs for strength in the squat/dead plane.

Standing pull downs with a wide stance, legs straight....Spread eagle sit ups, stuff like that.
