Advice on dumbell decline bench press

Hello there, was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. I was doing dumbell bench press on a decline bench last night and one of the gym staff was spotting me, kneeling behind the bench assisting from under my triceps/elbows. Got to 6 reps with no assistance, wanted to force out another 2, on the final rep my arms gave out at the top. It was like they were made of breadsticks and no surprises I dropped the weights onto myself.
What should I do next time? Mr.Staff said that I dropped them because my triceps are weak, and he's on the money about that but I'd rather not have two 45pound dumbells land on my chest everytime I do decline bench til my triceps catch up.
If you have any suggestions for safer technique, I'd love to hear them. Thanks.

"Have the spotter spot you at the wrists, that is where we always spot regardless."

That's what I do with clients unless they ask for elbow spots. Once the tris go, the dumbbell will collapse and it happens fast. Wrist spot is the best way to go most of the time with DBs, but is has to be done right.

I'm still working on a few with one tri weaker than the other, so you really have to watch the weak side.

Thanks for your input, Wilson6, I appreciate it. Can I ask, what is the correct way to spot someone at the wrist? You mention that it has to be done right.
