Fish oil or calamari oil?

Axed99

New member
I have been reading up a bit on both of them and I really want to start taking one or the other. Let me know your experiences or which ever you recommend and a brand please, because I am lost which one to get, I found blackmores fish oil for $25 for 500 capsules and calamari oil for $30 I'd prefer to get the cheaper option but I'd like the better option. Thanks

Honestly with all the polutants in the ocean, especially since the recent nuclear incident in japan I would avoid anything from the ocean.

I guess so, but I want it for joints and would really like someone's opinion on both, which one do you prefer? Also thanks for the in site, but if you had to choose which one?

Lets take a sec to look deeper into your issue.

You say you want it for your joints, why do you say that?

Fishoil, or more specifically the omega oils, which you can get from other sources besides oceangoing critters by the way, is viewed as an natural anti-inflammatory. I assume thats why you said you want it for your joints.

For starters, The omega oils are not a panacea for joint health. Are they a nice bonus....absolutely but you have to ask yourself first and foremost why are your joints hurting in the first place.

Do you have a specific injury thats bothering you or is it just kind of whole body aches? Either way I think you need to look at the bigger picture. Give me some history and what you specifically look to address with fishoil and maybe I can offer come advice.

That being said, I would personally opt for a land based cold pressed source of omega oils such as Flax oil, sunflower oil, sesame oil etc. Preferably organic!

I agree with you, I have read your posts and you are very knowledgeable, sorry I did not give much information as to why I wanted it.

Well here goes I have inflammation built up in my shoulder and hurts when I tense it, sometimes hurts when I work out but it's not much it usually goes after 5 minutes I had an ultra sound done and was told it was inflammation causing this. They put me on pain killers and the doctor said he will give me a needle if it doesn't get fixed.

Now the I'm guessing the doctor is going to give a cortisone shot and I heard it can make the shoulder weaker and that's the last thing I need at 19 years old and for bbing.

Also my wrists have had a little pain lately but not that bad maybe an hour or 2 after my chest workout only hurts when I do incline db press and cable cross overs and push-ups but usually goes away pretty quickly so I was hoping to use a product to help my joints as I'm guessing this is the problem with my wrist and the inflammation in my shoulder any help will be greatly appreciated man thanks!

Okay, you are pretty young to be having chronic pains that arent a direct cause of an injury. For starters I would urge extreme caution when dealing with and blindly following your traditionally educated doctor. Dont get me wrong, they have their place but I dont believe a regular doc is going to do anything but offer you life long permanent damage.

Next, lets look at inflammation, what is it? Inflamation is one of the steps in the bodies natural healing cascade, its necessary for proper healing!! As a matter of fact its an indicator of healing. Sure at times too much inflammation can be detrimental such as in blunt trauma etc but for the most part chronic inflammation is telling you there is damage thats in the process of being healed.

I assume you have been dealing with this issue for some time so then one has to ask, why is it not healing?

Tendons. ligaments, skin, arteries, meniscus and various joint linings and connective tissue are all collagen based tissues. Generally speaking these tissues are not very vascular and have a slow cellular turnover rate (ie it typically takes 300 to 500 days for all the cells in a tendon to be replaced by the body under normal circumstances). When one of these tissues is injured additional immune cells and other factors pool at the site of injury to facilitate repair. The less vascular the tissue the slower the healing.

R.I.C.E commonly preached does what? rest, ice, elevation and drugs all do what? They reduce circulation! Why do you want to reduce circulation to an injury thats already not very vascular and has limited blood flow? Generally pain comes with inflammation so reducing inflammation reduces pain BUT it also reduces healing!!!! This is fine for the typical couch potato but not for an athlete!

Avoid ice, nsaids/anti-inflamatories, they will make it worse.

Stop activities that aggravate it and make you want/need the above ice and nsaids!

If you have done the above the next step is to make sure you body has the building blocks of the damaged tissue. Primarily vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid(caps or powder is fine) multiple doses throughout the day, generally 1-3 GRAMS per serving, lysine 5-6g per day, proline 2-3g per day and chondroiten 1-2g per day. The reason for the high dose vit C is because its required for collagen synthesis but its also an electron donor to the immune system and detoxifier. Some people are exposed to so many toxins daily taht even if they take >20grams of vitamin C per day it can all get used up by the immune system and you still may be lacking whats needed for proper collagen synthesis.

Next, id recommend trying to find a good chiropractor who also deals with massage and physical therapy. In addition to nutritional shortcomings you probably also have a shoulder imbalance and mobility issues which are causing chronic pain because the shoulder is not functioning properly. extensive rotator cuff exercises combined with mobility work and fascia work to break up any adhesion limiting movement will go a long way to full shoulder recovery.

I know it sounds like a lot but your young and if you ignore it and continue to work through the pain I guarantee 10 years from now you will have permanent and irreversible damage. Dont ignore it.

Your wrist issues since so short lived will probably be fixed by a little rest and the supplements I listed above but it may take some time. They key is to avoid stuff that aggravates them.

Thanks for the advice man, I just have a few more questions, can still lift heavy on shoulders? Should I spread my shoulder workout 3 days apart from my chest workout? At the moment it's only 2 days apart? Also for my wrist should I stop going to heavy on db press? Or maybe get straps to balance it in the right place!

One more thing where can I get those supplement in bulk? If you can recommend me a site that ships to Australia that will be very helpful!

I have found vitamin c from china will this be ok? They have told me it is pharm grade? Is this fine or should I get one from somewhere else?

Also how long should I take it for? Should I get 10kg of each?

Thanks a lot man much appreciated!

For a while at least I would avoid any exercise that causes more than just a twinge of pain or any lingering pain after the exercise. Frequency of exercises is very individual and there are so many factors that come into play its nearly impossible to answer.

As for bulk powders, china MAY be okay. Im not familiar with that brand myself, but a word of caution. Many things from china are laced with toxins and heavy metals, id be a little leary getting stuff direct. Powdered form of all the stuff I mentioned would be fine. I cant vouch for taste or how well it would dissolve in water though.

As for dosing vitamin C, the more the better. Ascorbic acid is about as toxic as water. However it can cause stomach upset and diarrhea if dosing is too large or 2 frequent. The diarrhea isnt like food poisonng or anything like that its generally just an urge to go and watery a bit after taking too much, it doesnt generally haunt you all day.

Vitamin C plays many roles in the body. It is an actual component of enzymes used in the production of collagen(arteries, bone, tendons, ligaments, skin) but in addition to that it nullifies toxins and acts as an electron donor to the immune system cells. Exposure to bacteria and toxins can greatly increase ones need for vitamin C and since everyones exposure to toxins and bacteria is different its hard to say how much you NEED.

The good news is its virtually non toxic so I would recommend to take as much as you can without getting diarrhea every day in multiple doses spread throughout the day. Some people can only tage 1gram a day in many small doses. Others can easily take 6grams at a time 10 times a day. Everyone is different you will need to experiment to see what you can handle.
