Gym Etiquette

Tami Bellon

National Bodybuilder

A few things we should or shouldn't do at the gym....

1) Leave the phone in the locker room

2) Watch your mouth

3) Don't be a predator

4) Put your weights away

5) Don't walk in front of someone doing a set (usually at a mirror)

6) Don't stand AT the weight rack to do your set

7) Don't use more than one piece of equipment at a time (unless free weights is one of them)

8) Don't interrupt someone who is trying to focus. If they're wearing headphones - leave them alone, if they're looking at the floor between sets - leave them alone

9) Don't act like your an MMA fighter jabbing the air - you look like a dumbass

10) Don't walk around all puffed up with air-lat syndrome - again, you look like a dumbass

11) Don't drop your weights. If you need to drop them, they're too heavy for you

12) Ladies, tiny clothes = low self-esteem (99% of the time)

13) Don't grunt unless you HAVE to

14) Respect the personal space of others

15) Let people work in with you

16) Clean up your own sweat

......these are my own expectations - feel free to add more :)

It's a lost art. Bottom line is the lack of consideration. We are social beings that continue to retard ourselves with little regard for the unknowing outcome: degeneration.

well im guilty of 4,6, 11 on db bench, 13, 15 not to be an ass just to much distraction and disruption to timing, 16.

Well I generally will share equipment if someone wants to use something. If I am in a scheme where its a hassle I just explain if I cant do that.

Yesterday I watched a lady sit before I started declines on a pec dec. She was still there after. I wanted to do a set but it was obvious she was very comfy.

Dropping weights isnt so much an issue for me. Tami is use to me almost never dropping dumbells. I can press the 150s on inclines and you wouldnt know I was in the room. Still dropping gets a little stupid. Guys get careless and carries away which inevitably bends the dumbells.

As future said, it really comes down to just being aware and considerate of those around you. It's a basic notion that applies to life in general.

so i guess screaming " you stupid whore" at a loaded tbar wouldnt be good? j/k.

some do get a bit to carried away with stupid stuff. every time i wind up around a new croud i look like an ass to them but they soon find out im really not. i just get so focused on what im doing there i ignore every one i dont clean up i just move through like its life or death lol. its the way it works for me. but after i finish and eat i talk to people usually get questioned a bit and i clean up some shit laying around before i go.

I try my best but I know I'm guilty sometimes as well. I get in my zone and/or the gym is crowded and sh*t happens.

For people like me I'd add one more to the list. If you've been out of line, show some appreciation(green dots) to the other party next time. They'll like you for it. :verygood:

The only time I am a dick in the gym to others is when I am doing seated laterals or something right in front of the mirror and Joey 40yr old fitness body comes and starts doing curls right in front of me. Then he gets a "hey, get the fuck out of the way"

Other than that, I DO keep my cell phone on me to use the stopwatch for when I only rest 45 seconds between sets, or when I need a certain rest time.
I also drop the dumbells when doing flat bench once I get up into the 100's and above. But I'm not ridiculous or obnoxious about it. I dont throw them. i try to let them down as easy as I can.

im good with all of these except #2.. when i do grunt or mutter its under my breath, so i doubt anyone notices. its not scientology dammit!

I am VERY guilty of yelling at the weights after I have moved them for a PR. Actually pointing at them and yelling at them as if they were a real person that called me out like I am some sort of bitch. Usually it includes some vulgar name calling as well.

While I fully admit it makes me a tool, I think it is reflective of how I look at the weight as almost an animate object, and my level of intensity.

Fortunately, this behavior rarely happens in a public gym - mostly at the private training farm I go to.
