I see a lot of people using it, is it to replace fat that is cut out of thier daily intakes, because it is a healthier fat, or is there another logic behind it.
Some benefits are:
It helps to prevent atherosclerosis.
It lowers elevated blood pressure.
It improves the function of the liver.
It is useful in the treatment of some cases of edema.
It can improve the condition of dull hair.
It is helpful in the treatment of dandruff.
It promotes a healthy immune system.
It lowers total serum cholesterol levels
It lowers LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol).
It improves stamina.
It promotes a faster recovery.
It may treat some cases of depression.
It increases the strength of the nails and strengthens nails that break
easily.
It alleviates most cases of dry skin.
Little bit more complex than just treating depression though. It actually has to do with the imbalance of fat ratio of omega6/omega3. Once the right fat consumption rations are disturbed, the effects might be seen in any number of ways, such as an increased risk of heart attack, greater incidence of asthma, eczema and other allergic disorders, greater incidence of depression and schizophrenia, dyslexia, hyperactivity in children, kidney disease and bowel disorders. So as you can see with the imbalance of the omega3 from flaxseed to omega6, it can cause depression.
Flaxseed oil is helpful in "balancing" your essential fatty acids when coming off a typical American high saturated fat/sugar, low plant matter diet (ie high in omega 9's and 6's). However there are many other ways to get a balanced intake of EFAs (NB flaxseed oil is not balanced for long term use). These include increasing your consumption of nuts/avocados/olives/fatty fish or oils derived from these sources. Flaxseed oil is convenient, but not essential to a good fat loss diet.
BTW there are usually 3 teaspoons to a tablespoon.

the typical occidental diet is much richer in omega 6s and 9s than 3s
Would it be couterproductive to have more omega 3s (flax seed oil, fish oils, wallnuts,....) than 6s, 9s, monounsaturated (olive oil) and saturated (butter, meat fat,....) ?
