i put myself on a strength training routine to up my bench, and i finally hit 2 plates on monday...i posted the routine up before, and i am telling you it works (i think i am around week 7 or so, of 11)...btw, im not a beginner...my bench press was 120 november 2000 at a bodyweight of 135 lbs (maybe close to 140 on a full stomach).
its standard for beginners to gain a lot of strength early on, and my bench press quickly shot to 180 - 190 by about march, where it stayed for a long time.
today i am 167 on an empty stomach, and up to 170 holding in water, and food...my bench is now 225 for 1 rep, maybe a couple more with a spotter.
i think 35 lbs is good progress...and im not even done the program yet...i will try to find it and bump it to the top.
