I've read that sometimes people that cant' sleep dont' breathe deeply. They take short quick breaths. If you take a look at those in a relaxed state or those that are asleep, they take long deep breaths. People that are agitated or resless take shorter quicker breaths.
As I said, look into meditation or self hypnosis.
Theres' also a perscription drug called Ambien. That's a sleep aid, don't know if you're interested or not.
