Trap Bar Deads For Westside?

ballast

New member
For you guys that train Westside style, what do you think of trap bar deads as a ME exercise.I'm still experimenting with ME exercises and have found that I like medium- and wide-stance good mornings, zercher squats and pin pulls.I was just wondering about the trap bar deads as they start from the bottom like a regular dead and they hit the same muscles as squats so.....?

I do not think that it really matters much which ME exercise that you do, just that you give it a maximum effort.

I like doing the trap bar deadlifts. I havent seen the trap bar used westside style here in FLA but I tried out that trap bar befoe and its possible to get some SERIOUS POWER going in those trap bar deadlifts, more weight than regular deadlifts!....and the trap bar deadlifts spare that skin on the shins!

Dave Tate says they don't use trap bar deads , they tried them and they had little or no effect ... ( from the WS Seminar tape )

Thanks for the replies guys. Here's another question. What about the idea of using pin presses exclusively for my ME bench exercise and instead of alternating these with another exercise, what if I dropped the pins every two weeks thereby increasing the range of motion?Does this qualify enough of a change and still adhere to the Westside system? So, by the end of a 8-10 week period, the exercise has gone from a partial range movement into a full range movement.

Doing board presses are very key to your flat bench development. Very key. Doing pin presses will NOT substitute for board presses and vice versa. I would also get VERY bored with doing the same exercise every week too.

The only thing I know about trap bar deads is that they do feel better on your shins like cytomel pointed out, but I used to do these before I deadlifted on a straight bar and I found that there is a 90lbs difference for me with a trap bar and straight bar. I'm stronger on the trap bar. The whole stance is different it's almost the same movement but at the same time not really. Maybe it'll work the muscles but not in the same plane as conv. or sumo deads.
