Sodium intake?

I was trying to keep my sodium pretty low starting two weeks ago and talked to my trainer tonight and was told to up my sodium as high as I can until 4 days out.. said my body would at first hold on to water but then adjust and then in the end when I drop my sodium to near nothing it would shock it and my body would let go of the water...

he said by dropping my sodium now when i go to deplete at end I won't be able to 'shock' my body cause my sodium intake is so low.

he used a gazillion technical terms and when he explained and it made perfect sense.... said he's done tons of research on it and its worked wonders for all his girls and for himself.

whats you guys and gals take on this?

Again, sodium depletion / loading is another method that some people incorporate into their comp prep, some don't.

I tried a sodium deplete & load at my 2nd show - unfortunately I was so fat going into the show I couldn't tell you if it worked or not.

For this past show, I guess I did deplete because I was doing the weird thing w/ the 90% cooked meat, then basically steaming the meat the last part of the way before eatign -- supposed to pull off the last bit of sodium, then u wipe it off. The after doing that something like Mon - Thurs before the show, I started putting salt on my potatoes every hour. I still couldnt' tell you if it did anythign because I also started a water depletion on Monday. That was different than your usual water deplete started on Wed-Thurs.

the way you did the last show would be opposite of what he's suggesting though right?

he's telling me to up it now to the what ever I can handle then cut it out the last four days lowering it to as low as possible... wants me to start the water deplete on Wed gradually.

hmm.. lots of sodium isn't good for you... A normal amount until three days out is fine to do a sodium deplete... my suggestion but again everyone is different but this is what works for me... I usually dont take in a lot of sodium because my body bloats easy. For me I just up my water to as much as I can drink until three days out and then just tapper off on that... that gets like 5-7 pounds of water out of my system...

You aren't competing until July & he's saying sodium load now??? I'm confused.

The sodium thing we tried got a little screwy because we didn't really follow it thru. Then when the microwave at teh gym broke & I had to go to the Jiffy Food to use theirs, that was the end of the cutting of sodium. I happened to include some salt in my potatos mostly cuz it just tasted good. So I guess I'm not going to say I did anyhing specific for sodium.

Also I've noted several times that the 5 day water deplete is NOT what you will typically find in practice. I will note that I wasn't particularly miserably dried out the last 2 days and I don't think I had any water left in me to pull out either.

I would have to say that you shoudl go w/ what this guy says and just see how it works for you. You can experiment with other methods at diff shows or off season. I've got a couple opportunities to play with tweaking my manipulation methods over the summer, so maybe I'll try the sodium thing specifically or some other stuff.

yes.. he wants me to load now until 3-4 days before the show then drop it completely. .. I will just go with his method and see how it works. If it fails.. ill try something else next comp :)
