Shane Hamman Interview

CoolColJ, I'd give you Karma for your post, but it says I have to spread it around before I give u more.......The the problem with discussion boards is people who simply "don't have it" will tear down anything that they know they can never accomplish.......the other end of it is guys just starting out who have never seen an elite athlete at work just can't believe it because they have never been out of a high school weight room or a Balley's Total Fitness. Shane Hamman's claims are legit, and anybody who has ever performed a snatch, clean and jerk, or any assistance work for the lifts for that matter will realize that a guy doing those poundages is one special athlete. Ken Patera could aso dunk a ball from a standing position, and Marc Henry was on TV dunking a ball, and he could do some crazy shit.

they list his vertical at 36 inches? he is 5'9''. this precludes a dunk. At 6'3'' with a 36 I could barely dunk. I respect Shane more than most b/c I love olympic lifting but some of that is hype...

I think a lot of it depends on body structure, and how long your limbs are. Iron Lion, you are an elite athlete, actually, you're an unhuman beast, so I know you're not griping, just using personal experience......but for comparison, I'm a little under 6', and when I extend my arms overhead I can touch 7'3", so adding 36" to that would be 3 inchs above the rim, enough for a shitty dunk. I just wanted to add that a lot of it depends on an individual's unique body structure, maybe te guy has real long arms......or fuck it, maybe it is a little hype, but either way, he is a sick, sick athlete, and it he dropped 100lbs, he would be even sicker.

You must have crappy technqiue :)
Its time to hit the plyos and lots of dunking practise.

It takes a lot more than a good vert to dunk. Reactive strnegth is a must.

Most people can get a good 6 inches higher with a 3 step jump if they have good reactive strnegth. I've seen a few people get 10 inches higher with a 3 step jump. Most people get 3inches higher with a step.

You also lose 3 inches with a BBall in your hands, but a volleyball much less.

I've seen 6 foot guys with verts much less than 36 inches dunk the ball 2 handed. Most people can't jump very well from a stand, but with a small runup they sky.
My friend is 6 feet tall, he has a 36 inch vertical jump and can dunk the BBall one handed from a standing start.

im sorry you dont like my post ccj and bigbadbooty......... im not meaning to be dissrespectful......... but i have a hard time beliving some thing. excuse me for being practical. but one of the things i cant figure out is what made his muscle so strong from the get go?

if he was 19 and squatting 500lbs........ what in the world produced that muscle (and i remind you genetics provide the potental for muscle fiber etc..)

it doesnt mean you are born with the ability to squat 500lbs the first time you ever pick up a weight, especially coming from a soccer background.

excuse me for not beliving something that sounds impossible.

Exodus, how much a person can lift the first time they ever do an exercise is a very individual thing. Look at it this way. There is no way a guy who has say a 750 squat in competetion after 15 years of training could have ever squatted 500 the first time he picked up a weight, he has the potential to do at least 750, but probably not 1,000. A guy like a Shane Hamman with a 1,000+lb squat, with that much strength potential, obviously would have been starting at a much greater weight, where the guy with a 750 squat maybe did 300 the first time he squatted. Does that make sense? It is like a guy who is 7' tall. A 7 footer could be 6'4" at age 10 before puberty even hits, where most people cannot even fathom being 6'4" period. Do you follow what I am getting at? Or am I just carrying on? People with the potential for unbelievable things more often than not start out with pretty unbelievable things.

I don't want this thread to turn into a gay ass opinion fest. I think Shane Hamman is one of the most incredible individuals in the sport, and I retract all previous statements b/c when it comes down to it the guy ain't a bball player, and he did bomb squat 1000 lbs so why the fuck should this thread be anything but a hats off to the guy.
