Protein - Problems?

Just wanted to know if you could have TOO much protein? I encouraged a friend of mine to increase her protein intake & she started the shakes... however, now she's claiming that she hasn't gone to the bathroom in 4 days... could it be the shakes? She says she has plenty of fiber etc... & says that since she's started the shakes (last week) she's noticed a decrease in bowel movements. Could this be true?

hm.. have not heard of this one - is she taking fiber pills?? those help great.. Another one is excellent to add - UDO oil - has MCT and those make you run for the bathroom.

Lots of times dietary changes can affect bowel habits. Water intake is very important. Without enough water, the extra protein and fiber can bind up into one big mass and cause constipation.

She might want to take a stool softener for a few days until things get moving again, and then keep up with the water intake.

Thanx a bunch for the info!! I'll let her know... I didn't even think about asking her about her water intake & it's probably not up to par.

Actually, yes. Treat protien shakes just like you would a peice of meat, once the liquid is extracted by your body, what's left is treated the same way by your intestines as other protien sources. Balance the shakes with some good fibre during the day.

Increased protien in the diet without adequate fibre to compensate (veggies, bran, etc.) can clog you up quite easily. Over time, once again without proper fibre, this can lead to gastrointestinal difficulties of various nature. The worst being cancer, the least being chronic constapation (although constapation can become a life-threatining situation). If you develop a blockage, believe me, you WILL be in the hospital for a visit. I know this through intestinal experiences which I'd rather not get into.

Eat yer veggies folks.

If you don't I know a great gastroenterologist....

When I first went high protein, I didn't realize how important carbs, fat and water were to a happy body. :) I went all out on the protein shakes and was bloated as all hell and constipated. There really is such a thing as too much of a good thing! lol

I second everyone above - need water intake high, lotsa veggies, lotsa fiber and healthy fats will help too.

Thanx to all again! I'll definitely let her know! I didn't know what to tell her b/c I started on the protein shakes at around the same time she did & I'm fine. I eat at least 4 fruits/veggies per day & drink 100+oz of water per day... Well again, thx - this board is the BOMB! ;)
