What's up ladies and gents...

About a week and a half ago, I began to feel pain in my right shoulder. It felt like a stretching pain during bench across the front and top of my shoulder whenever I got the bar about 2 inches from my chest. I tried to lift through it but got pissed off and I've been off for a week and a half. It's feeling better but not ready yet. I was curious if anyone had any experience with this (which I'm sure a lot of you have) and if so what you suggest to speed the healing process. Any supplements you suggest? Stretches? Should I start doing any strengthening exercises for it? Thanks in advance for any responses/advice.

If you have health insurance, use it. Go to the doctor and have him diagnosis it, then go to physical therapy. That's what I'm going through with my shoulders.

Do some light rotator- cuff exercises to get it warm. When doing the bench press warm up with the bar and work your way up.

Do a rotator cuff warm-up and definately add in some strength/endurance exercises for the rotator cuff. Don't be one of the too many people that ignore this body part till it's too late and they have to recover from an injury instead of prevent it.

Sounds like a delt strain. Just be sure its not your acromio-clavicular joint. If you get arthritis there yer basically scr*wed. Rest and pain free range of motion exercises to start. Then restart progressive strengthening exercises. It's ok to strengthen a strained muscle if you can perform the movement without pain. Pain=stop. Your rotator cuff muscles are responsible for maintaining the correct anatomical relationship between your scapula and your humerus. Shoulder internal and external roatation exercises strengthen them. Exercising them to prevent shoulder joint injuries would be wise.

Glucosamin/Chondroiton...MSM..you may also want to make sure your getting enough fat in your diet. I know when im dieting and not getting the fat I need my joints tend to hurt while lifting. Try Flax seed oil.....after you go to the doc.

(1) see your doctor - very important or else the injury may get worse - better safe than sorry

(2) take time off working out (at least your shoulders where the injury is located)

(3) light training, maybe some help from a chiropractor could help you with your injury. to help the injury along, vitamin supplementation may work, as well as some herbs

Thanks to everyone for the great posts. My shoulder is feeling much better now. I followed a little bit of everyone's advice (with the exception of seeing a doctor).

Got on a "Join Formula" from the local supplement store. Basically Shark Cartilage, Chondroitin and Glucosamine. Really like the advice of being able to work out as long as no pain. Followed that to a T. Have been doing rotator cuff exercises 3 times a week on top of my workout. The feeling I get whether it be right or wrong is that the more I work it without over working it, the more blood I get in there and the better it feels/heals. Stopped using the bar (starting again today lightly). But I used dumbbells in the meantime and only came down half-way to avoid too much of a stretch.

Acropora, I think you were right. It felt like a delt strain eventually as it healed. Beginning last week I could actually push on my delt and feel the pain centered there. Much better now. Thanks to all for your great advice. Now it's time to get ready for my trip to Vegas in March. Gotta look good for the early spring breakers. Later. :)

Don't ignore your pain! I did and I ended up not being able to lift (for almost 2 years!). I'm getting better now. Went to the Doc and he gave me pain killers 300mg. That worked for a while then he bumped them to 500mg. After that was a cort shot. after that the Ortho Doc which he gave me a cort shot and told me to go to physical therapy. When back as a follow up and he said if I still hurt to have an MRI with possible surgery!

Read an article in M&F about Prolotherapy. All it is is shots to CAUSE swelling in the joint! Getting ready for my second shot (total of 6) every other week. For the first time I am feeling better an am stronger. I feel that I will ba able to go back to the gym soon!
