Have to agree with the general trend here - as long as people in your gym are cool about spotting, you don't really need a training partner. I find it easier to not have one - I'd be the one flaking out on him sometimes if I have to go to work early (I train at 5AM, but have to either move off days around or go at night sometimes if I have meetings timed for the London or Asian offices.) It's also easier to keep to a consistent set pacing when you train alone.
Some guys do seem to benefit from partners - I've seen partners who seem to feed off of each other's energy and drive. If that's what works for you , just put up a message on the gym bulletin board (or next to the key rack if your gym doesn't have a board somewhere) - if you go to a good-sized gym there's a strong chance that someone who trains at a different time of day is looking for a partner too. You (or he) might have to be flexible about times. Might even try putting up a message at other gyms if that doesn't work.
Just don't be one of those training teams who has to scream "PUSH IT! ONE MORE! YEAH! YOU CAN DO IT! YOU DA MAN!" EVERY damn rep of EVERY damn set, or one of us solo-trainers may be forced to beat you with an ez-curl bar
