hey guys i have been out of the bodybuilding seen for over 2 years due to family emergencys, ibefore all of this stuff was happening to me i just lost my passion for bodybuilding now in 2 years i gained 40lbs of pure fat, i know this is probably a stupid question but i tryed going back to the gym and i just dont like how i look i was wondering if i could just dial in my diet and do as much cardio as possible because i feel like i have the mucle, but its covered with fat and i just dont want to do a little cardio and weights again the question is i want to lose as much fat 9(weight) as possible in the shortest amount of time, once i feel comfortable then i feel i can get back to the weights ,what do u guys think and recoimmend, i know ther should be a balance a little cardio and a little lifting but i want to concentrate on losin fat even if i have sacrifise some muscle as my diet is high in protein so if you guys could give me your comments and how long cardio sessions or what has worked for you in the past i would appreciated thanks john

You don't really want to sacrifice muscle do you? Lifting preserves muscle loss and speeds up fat loss just suck it up an get ur ass back in the gym! After the first couple weeks you will be back on track.... Hurry up tho new years is round the corner n bout to get real busy :)

My advice too would be to just lift, and not do the cardio.

I was out of the gym for 7 years due to a severe back injury. I gained a TON of fat-weight-- roughly 60 pounds!!

I too only wanted to do cardio at first...I was embarassed to be so out of shape and uncomfortable. I did ONLY cardio for 3 weeks. I lost five pounds, but still looked and felt like a blob. Then, I said what the heck, and just started lifting again. In four more weeks, I could actually SEE all my muscle groups which had been invisible for years. I went from two 45 plates a side on the leg press, up to 5 a side... I have just felt so much better lifting.

I also read an interesting article by Nelson Montana about his (and others') opinions on cardio...In a nutshell, both he and many others believe that lifting weights is MORE effective at fat burning than cardio--because lifting results in added muscle, which uses more calories and burns more fat. (the other poster mentioned this too).

I can't prove it yet (until I get a hydrostatic weighing/body composition test done next week), but I feel like I have lost more fat through lifting than cardio. Since lifting over the last 4 weeks, I have gained 8 pounds, whereas I LOST 5 pounds doing cardio alone. It is very strange; I have kept a strict diet log, and my protein intake and calories have remained constant through the cardio and the lifting phases.

I suppose eventually all the new muscle I'm building will require more calories, which in turn will result in my body burning more fat. So yeah, I'm a tubby guy at 241 pounds and 25% bodyfat. But over time the fat/muscle ratio will change.

I think you'll feel good lifting and seeing how you progress.

Just my 2 non-scientific cents.

Good luck with the training!

there is nothing wrong with your idea. you dont need a gym, trainer, or pills to lose weight. it is extremely simple. do cardio before you eat in the morning. say for example a 30-45 minute jog 6 days per weak. then the diet just follow the rda and dont eat any carbs within 6 hours of bed time. take a multi v and drink lots of water. do not eat junk food. i promise if you do that you will chop the fat off fast and healthy. then you can start the weight training.
