need help with bench and deadlift

powerforward

Well-known member
been training off and on for 3 years. Been steady for last 6 months. Using 5x5 on bench and deadlift. I have had good gains up until last 2 weeks. Sample routine 5x5 of 225 on flat bench
followed up by 3x8 incline dumbells 75pds. Then 3x8 45pd. flyes.
Deadlift 5x5 255
Tried to max on flat bench today couldn't get 275 (got it before)
deadlift yesterday stuck at 315 for 2
any help or ideas would be appreciated.

I have rcently added deadlift into my routine twice a week.It seems to be helping today i got 345.The one day ill do 3 sets usually 3-3-3.than the next day i do the dealift ill do 1-2 sets for 1 rep max

Do you warmup when you are going for max on deadlift? If so what weight/reps do you use. Also do you do deads with leg training?

drop inclines, work shoulders doing overhead barbell presses, drop flyes. work triceps also. Drop 5x5 and do something else for a while. No one, and I mean no one, keeps making gains on one type of routine, you have to change it up.

Ways to increase your bench:

increase speed
perfect your form
train the heck out of your triceps (the right way)
strengthen your lats
train your rotators

Ways to increase your deadlift

use the box squat
train for speed
perfect your form
train your hips and hip flexors

thanks for the help guys. I'm going to change routine next week.
One question though, when you say train triceps right, do you mean close grip bench and dumbell extensions? Or should I try something else?

I found that cable pushdowns for tris do nothing. Went back to overhead dumbell for tris and triceps got a lot stronger. I tried skull crushers and I just didn't like them and they didn't do anything for me.

they make mine look good! hehehe. :D

actually i prefer an overhead as well. feels much heavier and i really pack the meat on with overloading the tris and not looking like im trying to win a bicycle pump contest by holding my body from flying up on the cables. (light guy with strong tris)
