Low carbs and basketball....newb mistake... or just plain dumb?

So I have been thinking about trying to lower the carbs in my diet to around 100g of my 2100 cals. Before this I had been getting aprox 184g of carbs in my diet.

I decided to try it yesterday. The day was fine... and everything seemed to be going good. Then my boys wanted to go to the park and play bball. So it sounded like a good idea to me since it was a non lifting day.

By the end of the day(aprox 2hrs of bball) I was done... just completly drained. So much so that my body was hurting and I felt extremely weak. Is this do to my low carb intake? or could this be just because I was pushing to hard on the court?

If I'm trying to cut what amount of carbs should I be taking in? If thats even the problem I was having. Do I want more or less carbs on cardio day? and what about lifting days? Any help would be apperciated

I am 5'6 175 15%bf 5x5program mwf bball T,Th(occasionally) and what ever sports I can play on the weekends.

It could be a combination of both the low carb intake and pushing yourself. Also the length of time u played ball is a big factor.

i try to limit my carbs to about 100 a day when dieting. u can ditch almost all carbs on non-lifting days. i make no distinction about carbs and cardio days.

on lifting days i make sure i have about 40grams of carbs in the morning and 60gr of waxy maize for PWO. u would drop the WM on non lifting days.

it will be "normal" to feel sluggish or have less energy until your body starts to burn your bodyfat stores for energy. even then u won't feel like u do when your carb intake is high. make sure to get plenty of fiber & vitamin supps, as usually they r lacking in keto diets. i would carb up once ever 4 or 5 days (after going the first 2 weeks strict) to about 300 carbs. this could include a cheat meal.

I ran low carb last year DURING summer league basketball and I was fine, but like 8 said your body needs to switch over to fat for fuel and that can take a couple days to a week depending on your body and the rest of your diet.

You should be fine, also make sure you stay hydrated! BIG factor that alot of people miss through the day.

So during these first few weeks going low carb how low should I keep my carbs? I do take WM on lifting days.

Thanks

~100 or less. It will be hard to get under 100 bc of the WM (accounts for 60 right there) on lifting days.

Lifting days will have more because of the WM, but Id say around 100 carbs. Non lifting days you can go as low as you want really. All of your carbs should be coming from veggies, anpb, and natural forms, so they should be minimal anyways.

So I should deffinetly cut out the oats.... what do you guys eat ur ANPB with since I will be staying away from wheat bread as well.

Also, What about nuts? what do you recomend? and what do I need to look for/watch out for when picking out nuts?

Almonds are good, or unsalted peanuts. I just eat ANPB by itsself. Anyways, the one thing you have to do is WATCH CALORIES when eating this stuff, its VERY calorie dense! But having some is a good way to keep cals up and get some healthy fats!

PS: Save the oats and wheat bread for CARB UP DAYS. You need at least one every 7 days or so, so that you replenish your energy stores for the week to come.

How about cashews? I have had my ANPB by itself on occasion... man is that stuff sticky..lol. Thanks for the advice. I have been doing my best to track all my food intake. So hopefully I will be able to keep my cals in check.

When I carb up how many carbs should I be getting on that day? and I should wait about 2 weeks(since I'm just starting) before I take a carb up day correct?

Yeah you CAN wait an extra week for your first carb up. Some people do, some dont, just monitor your energy levels and if you start feeling bad add A FEW carbs a couple days.

Cashews are alright also, as always just keep you CAL count in check.

On carb up days I think its like 300-400g of carbs...8 will give you an exact total if Im off :-)
