Hiit & Ckd

Would HIIT be effective while on a CKD diet or would it not be enough to send the body into ketosis?

Want to do the 6 wk challenge and wondering if I should stick to my same cardio (alternate aerobics & elliptical work) or go the HIIT route?

Any ideas?

when I did CKD, it was my diet that got me into ketosis and really nothing knocked me out except for my carb up days. Eat LOTS of fat. Don't be scared of it. This is what's gonna help you. Use MR.X's spread sheet and follow it to the T!!!! Carb up does not mean cheat day. Chose good carbs, like whole wheat pasta, sweet potatoes, veggies...

When I was on CKD I had limited energy. I chose to use this energy for lifting, rather than cardio. I was lucky to get 3 half hour sessions in a week and I was still in ketosis.

CKD doesn't really work as well for women as men, so don't get discouraged. IF this is the diet you want to do, give yourself plenty of time to get to goal. DITCH THAT SCALE!!!! Just use bf as your guide. Get some ketosticks. You can get them at your drugstore and also from drugstore.com. Then you can experient to see what knocks you out of ketosis, if anything! Good luck!

I go into ketosis just from diet, even before I train if I'm not doing anything the first day after a carbup. Anyway, HIIT training may or may not be the best form of cardio in ketosis, I haven't come to conclusion yet, myself. I could see it both ways.

I had no energy for HIIT when doing CKD - especially the first couple weeks. Long sessions of low intensity is what I was all about, the body isn't even going after the carbs that way. Books on tape (mp3) made it easy.

;)

High intensity work requires muscle glycogen and blood glucose, both of which are in short supply on a keto diet. For the most part, the only place you get glucose from is muscle tissue breakdown and the protein you eat when on a keto diet.

Keep the cardio low intensity so you primarily use fat for fuel. Save what little glycogen there is for the weights.

I'm not doing CKD, but I am doing HIIT 2x per week. I have pretty good endurance, but I really feel like I want to die after I finish a HIIT session. Here's what I've been doing:

Elliptical for 22 minutes on level 10:
2 min: warm-up @ 55rpm
8 min: 30 second intervals @ 55rpm then 78rpm
2 min: rest @ 55 rpm
8 min: 30 second intervals @ 55rpm then 78rpm
2 min: cool down @ 45 rpm

I used to be able to do this without the break in the middle. I really feel like death after this and according to one of my friends I look like it too. Maybe this is a sugar issue? Should I drink Gatorade after I lift right before I do cardio?

Sounds like a good glycogen depletion protocol to me. You're probably out of muscle glycogen and/or blood glucose. I'd bet lactate and ammonia are running really high in the blood.

Why are you doing the cardio?

wilson, I've thought of that conclusion myself about hiit while on CKD. I worry about muscle waisting from the lack of muscle glycogen, though again, it would be a great tool for depleting gylocgen stores the first day after a carb up. For cutting I usually do long cardio, at moderate intensity. I do hiit during bulking twice a week to help with my metabolism.

That approach makes complete sense. I'd save the glycogen for lifting versus burning it off with HIIT following a carb up. Nothing beats a good leg day.

Very true. I like to do heavy squats and deads the day after a carb up usually. Use the glycogen for my hardest workout.
