for those of you that have not herd of him back in the 1920s he did a one arm deadlift with 727. He did it with a "hooked" grip meaning that his thumb was on the same side of the bar as his fingers.

I just recently read about this, and WTF!! Isn’t that just insane?!?! Someone with hands like that could crush somebody’s skull just with a "gentle" squeeze! before i read about this i would never imagine that, that level of grip strength could even be possible!

i knew that i would not even approach that but just for the fun of it i tried some one arm deadlifts with a hooked grip, i pulled 170 with my left, and 180 with my right. needless to say i feel really week, but my hands feel like they got the shit kicked out of them, so for all of you that have never tried one arm deads with hooked grip you really need to! especially bfold, i know you like grip exercises so if you haven't tried this one you need to, and I’m eager to hear what your capable of, I’m sure you’ll destroy my numbers.

My understanding of a hook grip was that you put your thumb on one side of the bar and wrapped your fingers around the other side and covered the thumb.

Impressive either way.

that is my understanding also.

I know the one described to be a "false" or "thumbless" grip

When I have tried that grip it feels more natural until I pull-then it is like I am about to dislocate my thumbs from the pressure .

It's a good idea "in theory" but hurts like a sonuvabitch

aparently you get used to it................................................................................................................................................................

Yeah its legal.

I think when you get to certain poundages...........forget about it!

May as well just use the mixed grip (one hand under one hand over).

I think my hands are too small to do it......like the thumb position could result in a dislocation.....but a bigger hand would have better positioning.

maybe im just a pussy?

Europeans use this grip more often it seems, large hands are very helpful, also I remember someone pulling in the high 800's with this style, like around 890 or so. Just depends on your style I guess.

dont quote me.....but i think Ano at gometal.com uses or used it.

I have forgoten what this thread is about. Yeah thats pretty cool.

I have made a one handed thick handled deadlifting device ( a piece of pipe and a chain......)

It kicks my arse/hands.

single handed deadlifting is a challange
