Going back to gym...Post baby

gymmum

New member
I'm busting to get back to the gym and I plan to return on Monday 10 days post baby. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a routine to follow for a few weeks while I get back on track?

There's a thread in the stickies right at the top called "Introducing the newest EF member . . " and it is written by and to a new mother (Daisy_Girl, to be precise!) It has some chatter back and forth about working out post-baby and might be a good starting place (and check out the baby pics!)

Whatever you do, stay away from training your core, abs specifically, at just 10 days post you can do far more harm than good.
I'm sure your MD has not given the okay yet, they usually don't until your body has recovered at LEAST 6 weeks post partum. You still have high amounts of Relaxin in your system, so don't push it... you can get injured VERY easily. Best thing to do is just walk...... even still, ask your MD if it's okay.
:)

Be careful ... make sure MD has cleared you. Mine REALLY doesn't want me in the gym until 6 weeks PP. He also said no direct crunches - I can work on stabilizing muscles, but only a little at a time, and NOTHING intense or long. Walking is your best bet.

At 10 days PP, have you stopped bleeding and cramping? If not - I would NOT workout until this is done. And make sure you keep taking your vitamins. I would really talk to your MD about this. Your first priority is the baby and your health.

If you are breastfeeding, be careful too .... you need 500 extra calories a day to make enough milk for the baby. If you are too active, you will be in too much of a deficit, and your baby's (and your) health will be compromised. Also .... breastfeeding burns 700-900 calories a day JUST TO MAKE MILK. (this is a small reason why I am SO happy I am breastfeeding!)

Amen sister! My youngest is just two years old and I'm STILL nursing... little sucker (pun intended) just not ready to let go. If I slack on adequate, food water or vitimins boy, do I ever feel it. Isint the added calorie perk great!

Yes I am breastfeeding and thanks for the info. I have spoken to my MD and he said it was OK to return to the gym provided I take it easy.

If MD says okay, then who am I to say otherwise? :)

Be careful ... like I said, if you are still bleeding and cramping, then I would wait. Your body is still recovering.

Also, know that working out can change the taste of your milk. Baby might not like it - lactic acid builds up in the milk too, altering the taste. You might want to make sure you time a workout around HIS feeding schedule. Breastfeeding can help you lose baby weight, but it also can keep that last layer of fat on you that is tougher to get off - you need a certain amount of fat to produce sufficient milk.

PLEASE don't stress about losing weight right now. It is going to take time and first priority is your son's health

Thx DG.....I was only going back because I miss it....not really to loose weight as I only gained 3kg or 6lb in myself. Yes I am still bleeding. But after carrying him so low I have not been to the gym in 4 mths and I am eager to get back to it..mainly for the support of the staff, and the atmosphere the gym creates....I feel lazy and lifeless with out the get up and go I get from a good workout even if it is mild. But I may take your advice and wait a couple more weeks, as I didn't know that training changed your milk.
Thanks again DG without you girls on here I would know nothing of these things. :) :)

If you are chomping to workout again, I would jsut take the little one for a short walk everyday. Even 10-15 minutes might help you feel better and it will be nice to get out, plus give the little one a new stimulation. :)

Also, do some stretches, or prenatal yoga at home .... this might help you feel better too. You can usually rent DVDs or videos at a public library.

If you go too soon, your body will let you know. The bleeding will get worse, you'll cramp, feel weak all over and you'll be miserable. I doubt you'd be able to go overboard.

The only thing that might be difficult is most gyms don't take babies younger than 6 weeks, and you don't want them around other kids when they are that young and have such fragile immune systems. If family is going to keep the baby for you and you don't get worse bleeding and you take it veeeerrrry slow, you'll be ok.
